Ooh, almost forgot.  AMD X2 4200+, a complete beast of an overclocker.  I got 3.00 GHz on stock air from 2.2 GHz, and no voltage changes at all.

That's interesting, but doesn't the Q6600 have more L2 cache? I'd go with the Q9450, if doing 45nm.

I haven't looked at the sepcs; but is it just a higher clock speed? If so, a quick overclock could get you to that speed.

Driver hax.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

but then you might as well build your own chipsets ...

well you can never really go wrong with asus. A 780i based gigabyte will be just as good, personal preference really.

ASUS, XFX and EVGA are all pretty good brands. They all offer different things so it is a matter of what you like best!

I've never heard much about XFX motherboards, but eVGA makes very nice boards.

it wont.  it's a socket 939 too.

The XFX it is then, cheaper than the eVGA.  Plus I love that company.

Thanks for the help guys.  Now it's fund-raising time.

edit: whoa, forget that, the eVGA allows DDR2 1200 memory instead of DDR2 800 like the XFX.

eVGA also has a step-up program where you can upgrade to the latest products for the price difference. Not sure if anyone else offers that.

Yup, but I heard that you're not eligible if you ordered from Newegg.  Is that correct?

No. You order the Step-up through Evga with their MSRP, but the program is good if you purchased at Newegg
