Okay. Here has what I have got. I have just purchased a 6800gs for a PC. I have installed it and have downloaded the 82.12 driver. I started playing BF2 just to test and then there was a weird problem. The card ran fine for about 10 mins. The graphics went crazy. The whole screen turned green with white dots everywhere. I was not able to do anything. Then I turned off the computer and restarted. It got to the windows loading screen and then went back to the "crazy" screen again. I shutdown again and took the card out and put in the old card (fx5200). The computer is back to normal now. Any ideas on what is wrong. Do I need a different driver or what. The 6800gs worked fine for just a few minutes. The fan is running fine on the card. The only thing that I can think of is that the card requires a 300W PSU. I am running with a 250W (Dell) PSU. But, I was informed that the PSU is rated low and is actually rated at 340W. Any ideas? Maybe a different driver. I did notice that people were saying that they used a 82.12b driver. I was not able to find that driver. I am guessing that it meant a beta driver. (Which is what 82.12 is.)
maybe u installed sumthing wrong. im not sure.
im trying to figure out why my radeon card and like 20 other radeon users are having issues.

Does your card(6800) work with anything else? ie other games.lNightfoxl wrote:

ITs overheating. Get a can of compressed air and clean out the heatsink on main chip and graphics card air intakes, problem solvedlNightfoxl wrote:

Nope, it's the power..
"I just can't do it Captain, I don't have the power!"
ya i think you need a new PSU 250 is way low for nowadays high demands, im running a 500 and no problems just that my agp ATI card is no longer useful, bastards but i actually have a 6800gs on order ill let you know what happens when i pop it in.
Okay...Here is my next problem. I have got a Dell Dimension 4600. (Yea I know...don't say anything). I have not been able to find a place that can tell me what type of PSU to buy. Has anyone ever upgraded a PSU in this type of system and if so what PSU did you buy and did you have to modify anything to get it to fit?
I just bought a Geforce 6800GS a few weeks ago and the box says you need minimum 350watts. I agree with everyone else that it has to be the power supply. As for your dell I would google around and search forums but I would guess that any power supply that fits your case will work. Unscrew the powersupply, take it out and measure it (Length, Width,Height). Then someone will be able to tell you which PSU's will fit into your case. You can go to Newegg.com and look up powersupplies and click the link to the manufactuers site and usually it will tell you the measurements of the PSU.
Here is a link for a review of a 6800GS that shows the power consumption. Under load it is above 200 watts so it is definately your power.

Here is the link, I ordered my PS last night.

Our PS's from Dell are rated at 250 Watts. The new video cards need 300+ Watts.
The PCPC PS is a 470 W direct replacement for the Dimension 4600
Cost $149
Hope this helps.

I agree with the previous sentiments that it is most likely the PSU, but I have a question for you Nightfox: Did you put the card back in and try it a second time? Or more to the point, did you check that the VGA cable was plugged in correctly before you ripped the card out?
It sounds like it's the PSU, but it's never a bad idea to double check in case it was something small like that.

Well, I have just reinstalled the card. I have wiped out all of the old Nvidia drivers, going to reinstall them now and see what happens. I am also wondering why this card is only compatible with the beta 82.12 driver?
Nightfux, maybe your not understanding me. One more time from the top, this time with gusto.
IT'S YOUR STANDARD DELL POWER SUPPPLY!!!!!!!!!!!
Again for the sake of rapidity and hopefully it sinking in this time, the run of the mill Dell Power Supply for the Dimension 4600 is 250 Watts. (How do I know? I have mine sitting on my desk already out) Which in turn supplies 11 Amps on the +12 volt rail
With me so far???? Good.
(Remember the amps part, OK, you will see this again - OK? Good.)
The card you have needs at the minimum a 300 Watt Power Supply, but most manufacturers recommend a 350 Watt supply , AND (I told you you'd see this again....) 18 Amps on the +12 Volt rail.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
In conclusion, you can put the most 7337 uber, sparkly hot shit drivers you want in your box, reformat until you wear out your CD for God's sake, if you don't jack that crappy ass'd Dell black box power supply YOUR SPANK ASS NEW VIDEO CARD WILL NEVER WORK
Damn I hate repeating my self! You come here looking for answers, we give them (Fug, I have the same shit as you doofus, and you still don't listen (keep this up sonny and you'll die dumb, or at best case you'll aspire to "Do you want to super size your order"))
Want it to work, get the PC Power and Cooling 470 Watt supply it provides 26A on the +12 volt Rail, you'll be good to go, now stop telling us your reinstalling drivers, it will not do crap.
But if it makes you feel any better, drive on.
(and I'll take the Number 3 with a coke.)

Not enough alcohol? or maybe too much?!
Seriously though - let the guy figure out for himself, he's not actually compelled to follow anybody's advice, so ease off, and go get a drink
Cheers. It's friday and just unwinding from the stress of not being able to play this weekend.

TO M730A2:
I am sorry if I stepped on your toes about anything. (Damn). I am seriously just trying to MAKE SURE that it is not a driver/software problem. I see that you have said that it is my PSU. I understand it. But, there are also people that I have talked to that have the same setup as me and run this card fine. I am just making sure I have not missed something. I will be getting a new PSU tomorrow and test this again. Even though I feel your harshness towards me was more on the lines of sexual frustrations and I think you need to point it somewhere else, I want to say thank you for your comments.
The only thing that has stopped me from doing this thus far is the card runs fine for just a little while while I play Battlefield. Then it starts with very glitchy graphics (to the point to where I have to shutdown the PC). If someone could please explain the connection between the power supply to this type of problem starting I would appreciate it. I am by no means a genius when it comes to PC hardware. I do not understand how the card works fine for a few minutes and then goes crazy. I have ruled out overheating. The card never gets over 58 C. The only thing I can think of is maybe a wattage drop or something. (Sorry for the dumb questions).
Thank you for any comments.

You'r no genius, I'm no genius, I'm no electrician either - but I have wondered about one thing (I had the exact same problems you have btw..)
As the card warms up and the circuitry gets hot, electricty passes through slower (or said differently) more power is needed to supply the card with a constant level of power.)
That's my only guess - or perhaps the card starts out fine - but as info is stored and taken out of card-memory, that will need more power.) what do I know
Other than that - do you have appliances that need power out of your PC? USB-devices? joystick, MP3-player etc. I pulled out all non-essential wiring and that seemed to help somewhat.
Then again, buying a $2000 PC will also help somewhat
Well I have tried unattaching everything that was not needed to see what would happen. It lasted a lot longer, but ended up doing the same thing. Fixing to install the PSU I got. 480W PSU!!!..That should work...I hope.
Sure hope so - the game kinda picks up when you can see shit
