I actually wouldn't be surprised if we did see DX11 by years end.  DX10 was a major overhaul of the DX API, but DX11 will likely be an incremental upgrade to DX10, much like DX updates we saw prior to DX10.

I think that 'incremental patch' that you mean will be DX10.1

Certainly fake.

But, actually, raytracing is the next logical step. But it'll be GPU based raytracing, not CPU based, and actually, the current raster engines use some raytracing techniques.
