(US&A) What exactly does one do in undergrad studies for med school?

So we're doing all this college crap at school, and one of the things that interests me is medicine (possibly become a doctor).

Thing is, "Schools of Medicine" seem to be all at the Graduate level. What does one study at the undergraduate level before moving on to the graduate level for medical school?

I plan on entering that field and I was told that as long as you have a strong background in biology, chemistry, and physics, you ought to be fine for getting into a medical school because they don't really care what your major is. To make sure these are covered, you should probably major in something like General Health Sciences, Pre-Medicine, or something like that.

Any noteworthy college will have a premed program. They teach to the MCAT exam.

You'll cover:

Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Physics
Biology
Biochemistry
Calculus

I figure with hard work and of course, studying something that I actually like, I can get good grades.

For example, at my university, if you want a physics degree with a premed program, you would follow a course of study somewhat like these.

I remember going to a seminar about the MCAT and the life of being a doctor. The speaker (a doctor himself) was asked this question, and he stated that taking the usual - Biology, Chemistry, etc. - is important, as well as things like Humanities as a side course. He said something about, it shows compassion, that you're capable of caring for a patient (since many jobs don't require you to make much human contact apparently).

Can anyone comment on this? It seems like a good idea, albeit slightly stressful.

Of course a Humanities class (or more specifically, Ethics) would do well. Ever heard of the Hippocratic Oath?

Really depends. I'm going to do biology (micro, biochem, I'm not sure yet), but med schools don't really want straight up science nerds anymore. You can study anything you want (well, major in anything you want) and still get into med school if you take all of your pre-med requirements. In fact, you have a better chance these days if you're unique.

It's really sad, big pharmaceutical companies aren't coming out with new important drugs anymore because they get slammed with a huge malpractice case every time something bad happens, sue happy america ftl

Well you can declare to do "pre-med". You just take a bunch of extremely basic and extremely easy math, physics, science courses and get straight A's. And tbh, if you don't get all A's, might as well consider a new profession

i suggest you major in some sort of biology your first few years before you go to medical school...the first few years are pre-med and it is a blow off.

Of course, if they didn't make such obscene profits, people might sue them for less (or least be awarded less). I don't have much sympathy for pharmaceutical companies.

pre-med. most schools (but not all) have a program, and if they don't counselors will point you in the right direction. just FYI med schools are impacted to hell right now, if you want to get into one you're going to need a 4.0 throughout college.
