hey my friend wants to get a new desktop, a lot of the reason is because he wants windows (he has a mac laptop) and he really wants the AutoCAD 2008 and 3D Studio MAx programs that me a a bunch of my friends got
it does not need to be good at all for gaming, he does not play computer games, only xbox, so dont worry about that.

he talked to someone who recommended this  (the 999$ one)
http://www.gateway.com/systems/series/529598059.php

so my question is whether or not this computer will be fine for him, basically just as a normal computer but also for use of cad and max. keep in mind tho that he wont be making any super extreme drawings or anything

advice?

It's ok.

The only real down-side to it is that he'd be paying for 'free' software, whereas he'd really need more RAM - CAD and 3DStudio like lots of RAM.

(though, I'm not up on US prices, and I cba to do any comparisons, so dunno whether it's good vfm)

well a bunch of us already have the programs and have been, umm, 'completely legally' giving them to eachother, so he doesnt need to worry about buying the software.  but yea, on my computer i have a 3 ghz processer but only 1.5 gigs of RAM, and they both seem to run fine for me. sure they can get a little laggy once a lot of complex things are created, but using layers and hiding helps a lot.  and i doubt he would be doing anything more complex than me.

I meant the 'free' software you get with that PC. But, yeah, he'll only notice the lack of RAM if he really uses those 'completely legal' apps a lot. The CPU will make little difference.

The kind of work he does will determine the kind of computer he'll need. Sure, you can go all out for a rig with a two grand FireGL V8650 video card, but if you're just modeling and not running an animation farm, then a "gamer" card will work just fine.

This is true.

Looks like a good option for me. ONLY IF you are sure you/your friend will not build the computer oneself. That way you'd get much better price-performance-ratio.

That's a pretty sweet deal for a pre-built, considering its specs. If having problems with rendering, the card could be swapped out for a better one, but I doubt it will.

I can't say I've had much experience with Acer's customer service, but it would probably be cheaper to just fix it yourself or take it to a local shop rather than RMA it over and over.

Actually, that'd make a pretty sweet setup for a professional modeller/game developer.

CAD and 3DS are real memory hoggers. Be sure that the system has at least 2GB of RAM and a half decent processor!
