Not _too_ great improvement over 88xx-series. Mostly ~10% over the 8800GTS 512MB.

They didn't use the pre-release 8.4 for the X2 Powerplay bug exists in 8.3 whql...

edit: btw this is what HardOCP thinks about 9800GTX

"The 9800 GTX is disappointing to the enthusiast and certainly confusing to those that are not in a position to understand the svelte changes that lie under the heatspreader."

"The 9800 GTX is a not an upgrade for the gamer already using an 8800 GTX. There are a few reasons that the 9800 GTX is a better product than the 8800 GTX, but gaming is not one of them."

For the price, it's a pretty good card. Mid-range gamer card, it seems they're making it out to be.

mid range = $200 for me.

that means the 88GT, maybe the G92 GTS.

yeah... the next gen cards are 9900 series so you'll have to wait for new card A LONG TIME then.

Meh...they'll be out next year. I say early Q3 '08 for the 9900's, Q2 '09 for the 10 series.

I still rather go SLI and pay 250,00 for 40% performance boost thann buying the 98GTX for 350,00 and get a 10% boost over my single 8800GTS.

My worry is when these cards start to go over 9.6" long. It means people will need case updates as well if their case isn't too big; although it can be debated that someone buying a 9800 is likely to have a pretty beefy case. Nice card, nonetheless. But the 9600 is something I still prefer for its price.

Yeah, soon they'll release their X300. That's gonna KICK ASS11!!!11!1!
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

the 9800 GX is at 529,00 € here, so that would be a no-go for me.

for comparison:

8800 GTX 768mb - 289,90 €
8800 GT 1 GB - 279,90 €
8800 GTS 512 mb - 299,90 €

3870 x2 1 GB - 389,90 €
regular 3870 512 mb - under 200,00 €, and that's with DDR4 RAM.

although I must say, it doesn't really matter to me, as I only play CS Source, and BF2, so anything 512mb DDR3/4 or better will be great for me.
I'll hopefully build a new system at the end of this year. Up to now, I have only used ATI cards. Let's see if that is about to change.

edit: at the moment, I'd probably buy a 8800 GTX. But who knows what prices/cards will look like at the end of the year.
