friend with graphic card problems

basically my mate has a new graphics card

ati radeon 3800 series
512MB
128bit

thats all the info he gave

i think this is the right order you install a new graphics card.
uninstall the old drivers
take old card out
insert new card
install new drivers

in his words this is what happens

I uninstalled the old drivers, took out the old card then put in the new card then installed it, after i installed it it asked for a restart then it stops at the login screen thereafter

basically now when he loads his computer it gets to the login screen which he can see for about 1 second then the computer switches off.
any sujjestions

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. he says he got a 450V supply with it and he "says" he has set it up, whether he has done it correctly i dont know, hes not very good. is this really the only reason this happens or are there any other options, bear in mind it is only the graphics card he has upgraded no other components in the computer.

I assume you mean 450W?

What are the rest of the specs of his PC?

And, are you saying that he installed a new 450W PSU at the same time or only installed a new graphics card?

Ok, well, without knowing the rest of the specs, we can't be sure, but a 450W PSU, if that is what he has, should probably just about be enough.

As others have said, it does sound like a possible PSU issue.

But, there are other possibilities - one of which is that windows is just freaking out - get him to try a complete reinstall - if that doesn't help, either the new card is fubar'd or he needs a new PSU.

I really don't like driver cleaner and it's ilk - had too many bad experiences with that kinda program in the past.

fair enough. Giving driver cleaner a shot is a lot faster than reinstalling though. If it works, all the better, if it doesn't, you can always reinstall anyways

Who knows what PSU he has? a 450 watt bargain PSU will get raped on even a 7 series card XD

Make sure he gets a decent PSU, it's the area some people look over and just get a cheap one, it's a big mistake. You should be going for a 500- 600W at least for the newer cards coming out, you can never have too much power! XD

Who ever said it was the drivers - Just boot the PC in safe mode, see if it will boot.

Exactly my point. He might be using one which he got free with his case, which we all know suck.

I had my 8800 gts on a 450 watt power supply, was a fairly cheap unit too but it seemed to to the job ok until i got a hiper 550W, the stability and performance went up loads. I got over 1k more on 3d mark 06 and the framerates are very solid.

now that you said that, yes, he did use the one that came free with it.

What monitor does he have? What resolutions does that monitor support? Also, double check that the video card is seated properly, just to make sure.

Now it almost sounds like the monitor is causing an issue with an unsupported resolution?
