This problem has been nagging me for a while, and I haven't been able to find a solution to it.

IE7 will not open png files.  I can see them just fine if they are within a webpage but if I try to open a png file by itself, IE tries to download it.  If I set the default program for png files to IE, it will constantly ask me to download the image.  Very weird and very obnoxious.

Basically, if I try to open an image with IE that is a PNG file, it won't open.  If a PNG file is an image inside a webpage, it works fine.

Has anyone else ever seen this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Firefox?  Never really use IE so I wouldn't know.

Never seen it and I'm using IE7 and FF (multi browers surfing cause I'm that cool).

My sig is a .png I'll try to open it and see what happens.

Hmm it opens up .png just fine for me.

What happens when you just copy the .png url and open it in IE? Does the download promt start again? If so you probably have a plugin causing the problem.

Instead why don't you set the default program for opening it to say: fireworks, photoshop, or an image viewer (whatever you might have)... instead of having the .png  file extension associated to IE, Firefox, Navigator, Opera, Safari (... etc). I don't know what is in your registry at the .png file association location, but it is easy to set the association to something more appropriate.

I had MS Office Image Viewer set to do that, but when I want to view a linked PNG file on a website, I would need to download it and let an image viewer deal with it.  My job involves a lot of images which are mostly PNG files, so when I go to meetings and try to view results and I need to open another program, well, it gets arduous.  I didn't know if anyone had ever encountered such a problem.  Thanks though.

It's weird.  If I click a link, it goes to the download prompt.  If I paste the link into IE, it works just fine.  Very strange.

No.  I have used FireFox and the only features I liked were adblock, flashblock, and tabs, all of which I have on IE.

So for convenience you simply NEED to have IE work correctly. You just want it to do what it should do. Open the .png file in say: the current IE window, another IE window or tab.

Well, have you tried re-installing IE? Somethings gone haywire in the setup/or registry.

I don't have or use Internet Explorer 7. I am downloading and installing it now. Not sure if I can recreate your exact-problem, but I will try.

I would never again use IE. FF3b4 has fixed a lot of issues in FF2 (A lot less RAM usage, for instance). Seriously, at least try it. It's more secure also, since it's so new and hackers hasn't targeted it yet.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Yeah, but there are near to no add-ons working for it.

I don't want to turn this into an IE vs. FF thread.  I have tried FF, I prefer IE.  Let's leave it at that.

Reinstall doesn't fix it.

I appreciate your help.  Thank you.

I found a fix that worked!  If anyone else has this problem, the registry fix is here.  It's not a fix for the exact problem I had, but it worked just the same.

I couldn't get it IE to goof... like it was for you. Moot since you've found a registry fix. And, reinstalling IE (actually some other things too like certain hardware drivers) only works if you actually clean the registry of any and all references after the uninstall, prior to the re-install.

To do an actual clean re-install you must uninstall then remove the necessary lingering references in the registry (as many simply do not get deleted after you uninstall). It's rather annoying if you can't find a registry cleaner for that particular offending app. or hardware driver.
