Perhaps I can understand this if working during school hours ...KEN-JENNINGS wrote:
OH - I'm 27, and I had to have a workers permit for the first job I had - 1996. Maybe it's a new thing, but I think it's mandated by the school through education laws.
Cali too. Like I said, I think it is mandated through the school for some reason. I'll look into the specifics later tonight, because I'm curious too.Sgt.Gene wrote:
Ya I have never heard of that either. Prolly just a NY thing. Down here in FL you can start working at 14 with no permit.OrangeHound wrote:
I'm confused????? Since when do you need to have "working papers" to work as a 16-year old? Is this a state or federal thing ... I didn't have to do this in Tennessee.
(Yeah, I'm old).
I needed then 6 years ago. My brother needed them 11 years ago. They aren't that new at all in NYS.Mitch wrote:

I counted 31 f words in there, anyone wanna double check?
I mean the 16+ is very recent. I know >16 was required for a long time but the fact that even AFTER i drop out im still tied to that fucking school (yes, even if you drop out here in new york, you have to go to the school for a working permit that says you dropped out.)SenorToenails wrote:

Wow, sure are eager to work at Subway
I didn't know you needed "working papers." I've got a federal-issue "Work Permit" though... has my residence application number and other important info. I think it basically lets me get work while I wait for my green card.

Born in Argentina to a Chilean and a Canadian
Moved to US&A when I was 3, my dad got employment here and I've lived in the US under a special visa my whole life
Applied for my green card early last year... paperwork didn't get sent to USCIS until like June though because paperwork takes forever to fill out
Got my work permit 6 months ago
Now I'm waiting for USCIS to call me up for an interview. Then in a few months I should get my green card and be a permanent resident
Yeah, it takes that fucking long to get a 16 year old Canadian to become a resident. I guess us Canadians rank up there with Arabs in terms of suspicion. No wonder all the Mexicans come here illegally, it takes FOR FUCKING EVER to get a green card. And it's incredibly expensive.

Pay one or two thousand dollars for the incredibly screwed up bureaucratic office of USCIS to take ages to process you... lulz.Mitch wrote:

I clicked this thread with different expectations...

I was 16 when I got my working permit. As was my brother. I needed it when I was 17 and had a job at Burger King. That is nothing new. You are a minor, and therefore have restricted rights. And if you think about it for a minute or two, it makes sense to have this tied to the school district, even if you dropped out.Mitch wrote:

Haha to become a legal resident (or citizen) it costs a hell of a lot more than $2000.HurricaИe wrote:

Wouldn't surprise me. I just remember seeing a check to USCIS or something for a fair bit of cash.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

The USCIS fees just went up 4 times for most of the filling feesKEN-JENNINGS wrote:

they figure people will pay no matter what the cost, so they raised the prices. We missed the dealine by 12 hours so now I have to pay 4 times more than If I would have sent the papers out 12 hours earlier... They give a break to no one!
And since because of that deadline, there was a rush of people filing their paperwork to beat the deadline. Now a normal waiting time has changed to about a 6 to 9 month waiting time...
Here's a list of fees in PDF http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/G-1055.pdf

well now from hearing from spider and hurri, im FUCKING GLAD i was born here. I have a small insight to what you are talking about, its called the mother fucking DPS. (Its the DMV texas just doesnt have one)
Getting working papers takes like 10 minutes. Calm down. And in NYC you can get working papers at 14, I assume it's like that in the whole state of New York. You had two years to figure this stuff out, Mitch.
