Air Force =/= Flying.
Sure, only 4% of the AF flies, but I could still do things IN planes, like work the guns on an AC-130.Major.League.Infidel wrote:

Plus, I'm probably going to have my COMMERCIAL (and Instrumental) pilot's license after college, which makes me have a better chance of actually being able to fly.

You need to be at least a Warrant Officer. In fact, I believe newly minted pilots are made Warrant Officers, and only make "real officer" status when they are in a leadership position.Jibbles wrote:

Marines FTW.
* As far as I know, the Army does not require you to be an officer to fly a helicopter. I know the other branches require it for both rotary and fixed wing piloting. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the Army can confirm this
Edit:lol, that's where I'm going in 5 monthsDocjones wrote:
Marines. Thats where I'm going in two years.
kinda off topic but how does the whole active duty education thing work in the Marines?

Army Helo Pilot.

Imo, people hype the USMC too much. And only cos of all the games n films n shit
Lol, my wanting to join the Marines is in no way related to movies or games, in fact all the portrayal of Marines in games now kind of pisses me off.Mek-Izzle wrote:

Every commissioning source has it's pluses and minuses. A Lt from an Academy is stronger in some areas than an Lt from ROTC, and vice versa.Docjones wrote:
rotc makes the worst officers.Spazz wrote:
try a NROTC program or a ROTC program you get college education + scholarship + officer
It all evens out by O-3.

FYI: the USAF does not have warrant officers.HurricaИe wrote:
Yeah, I remember talking to a guy in the Air Force on the metro. I think he did officer training, he was like a Chief Warrant Officer 2.
I really can't recommend the Air Force, if those are the only jobs you want. Aircrew positions are fairly limited, and we don't fly very many helicopters.

Regardless of what branch you choose realize a couple of things:
1. You may not get to do what you originally thought
2. If you make it a career, you WILL NOT be doing what you originally thought for the entire 20 years.

Simple Answer
I wanted to be a pilot too, but am too tall to fit. I went up in my friends light aircraft and had to put my feet on the dash over the top of the yoke.Mek-Izzle wrote:

I'm going to be joining the RAF, unfortunately I probably won't get any pilot position because:
- We don't exactly have that many aircraft
- I don't have 20/20 vision anymore (although I suppose laser surgery could correct that)
But as the cheesy advert goes "you don't have to be a pilot to fly in the RAF" (no I'm not going to be a cook or a janitor you /b/f2s tards )
If you can become a pilot, do it, Mahatma...
Go for pilot, as when your sick killing people to protects rich men's interests you can get a very well paid job with the training.

So id say not every grunt is going to get that kind of action. Might be polishing boots for 20 years.
Id join the marines if McCain gets elected. You'll see some action then..........
