Even one 8800GTS G92 is almost as good as an 8800GTX. So two 8800GTSs would be very powerful.

N a lot more expensive, I agree with the idea of the 2 8800GT's in SLI, would probably be the better option.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

cheapest 8800GT (512mb) is €140 here.  Cheapest 9600GT is €130.

SLI up 2 8800GT's.

To answer your first question, rather than give you more options, take a look at this - it's a review of the 9800GTX with comparisons to SLi 9600GT's.

Basically, SLi 9600GT's outperform a single 9800GTX, but not by much.

If I were you, I'd put up with the slight performance impact, get a single 9800GTX for now, then a 2nd one when you can.

Exactly!!!

I mean (tobz102) if you're actually considering SLI you should just get the 9800GTX and then when prices fall, and they will in the near future (a few months from now), you just get the second 9800 GTX and go SLI then (assuming of course you have an SLI motherboard).

What resolutions do you plan on running games at? What's your monitor capable of?

The reason I ask, is because the 8800GTX (and Ultra) have more memory and better memory bandwidth (than the 9800GTX). The 9800 is better/faster at certain lower resolutions. But, the 8800GTX (and Ultra) might actually perform better at higher resolutions especially when anti-aliasing is enabled (which is when more memory is definitely needed).

PS: Just a side note - SLI really doesn't began to show its value until you run games at higher resolutions.

I'd have to recommend the 9800GTX. It's going to give you less problems, being a single GPU solution, and the cards themselves are relatively cheap (in a good way).
