HighWizard notes that Adobe Systems has shared the first scrap of information about its next version of Photoshop, CS4, and it's a doozy: there will be a 64-bit version of the photo-editing software, but only for Windows Vista and not for Mac OS X. Ars explains the history of how this conundrum came to pass — blame Apple and/or Adobe as you will.

Why not 64-bit native for Mac?

OSX supports 64-bit software natively through Cocoa....

Isn't Photoshop written for Cocoa? Have they been slack and left it in a rubbish Carbon format? If so, that would explain why Photoshop runs so badly on Macs - despite whatever lies people may tell you to the contrary.

Wow...2 of 3 concerns voiced in the article brought up in one post...

2)  Adobe gets castigated for "dragging its feet" on Cocoa/x64.
3)  We start hearing all about "Cocoa Über Alles"--about how Adobe should have known that Cocoa is the One True Way™ and should have started the move years ago.

Apparently Adobe stuck with Carbon, and Apple decided not to develop Carbon x64.  Adobe now needs to convert Photoshop to Cocoa for x64 support.
