The awesomesmiley originated on the SomethingAwful forums, after which it became semi-popular elsewhere such as 4chan. Being a lurker on the aforementioned site I picked up on the smiley and decided to start using a 1000x1000 picture of it after every post I made on BF2s. After some talks with the mods I got a 3 day ban, but it had already become popular here fast. I started using the awsm smiley as my TF2 avatar along with surgeons, and due to both TF2's popularity and awsm's impact on BF2s a lot of BF2s members started using it as their TF2 avatars. Since then more people and more people have been using it here too. Also, Chuy made an awesome-smiley generator at some point.
