Right, i had Vista Ultimate x86 installed to test it out. But after a while i got bored of it and went to reinstall XP (Pro). Now note, before i had Vista i was reinstalling my XP regularly (about every 6 months) - so i know my hardware is compatible. It seems Vista has done something?

But after two days im yet to get through the install process. At first i was having a BSOD with pci.sys, but i managed to fix that by using a windows XP SP2 CD (before i was using SP1).

Now, when i go theough the setup i get to the EULA, press F8 (I Agree), and then choose where to install XP. I get a list of 4 "unrecognised disks", and when i hit enter i get a BSOD with "PAGE FAULT IN  NON PAGED AREA" with refernce to "setupdd.sys.

Everywhere on the net points to bad ram or incorrect drivers. I have 4GB (4x1GB), 2x1GB of which i added since i got the pc - so i removed those. Still not working. Ive also pulled out one of the SATA drives (i have 2 x 250GB SATA drives). Nothing. Ive also downloaded SATA drivers from the Dell (*yuck*) website, and F6'ed them into the install. Still nothing (that gives me a difference BSOD).

Ive also reset the BIOS, removed the BIOS (cmos?) battery and updated to the BIOS. Still nothing.

What do i do?

10 Karma for the winner!

Remove the hard drive that you have vista installed on, and install XP on another hard drive (I mean physically unplug it, not just partition work).

Then if you can install XP plug in the hard drive with vista, you should have a dual boot now, boot into XP and format the partition that vista is on from within XP.

Raid drivers. if you don't have a floppy with raid drivers already... go make one... that fixed similar problem my friend had...

I think it is F5 or something that you must hit when the install begins to load the raid driver from the floppy (note that HDDs might not be recognized without doing this even tho you don't have aRaid array. This is just someting you migh need to do.)

edit: or just find a format tool and do full format for the Vista HDD before trying to install it and go go go.

Thanks for the responses.

PBAsydney - Just FYI, 1 Drive was for OS's, the other for backup. I had Vista on a partition on Drive 1, and then used Acronis Disk Director, to delete the parition ready to install XP in its place. At the moment, im transfering the backup data from drive 2 to drive 1, ready to try to fresh install xp on drive 2. Ill keep you updated.

GC_PaNzerFIN - As i said in my OP, i used F6 to intergrate SATA driveres into the install and that didnt work. But yeah, once ive trasferred the data off drive 2 ill reformat drive 2 just to make it nice and clean.

Thank god all my documents are on an external drive...

Use a program to slipstream all your device drivers onto your install disc, as well as sp2 and any other hotfixes you want. I had trouble installing Vista at first, but that solved it. I think you can use nLite.

Can i get a Mod to merge my two topics (got that posting bug).

Well, no dice.

I moved everything off drive 2, and then formatted it completely.

I tried to install, agreed to the EULA, and still got 4 unknown disks. On hittin enter, i got the BSOD with setupdd.sys

So its not a hard drive problem? It it my mobo / BIOS?

/cry
