So there's this website that has a bunch of videogame soundtracks and I'm trying to download some of them, but they want me to refer users. I send out a link and then people click it and I'm supposed to be able to download stuff. Well I just downloaded Tor since I imagine that they track referrals based on whether people from a different IP address click your link. I've tried clicking "New Identity" on Vidalia and when I click the link, it doesn't show me as having referred anyone. Am I doing something wrong? (I'm very new to proxies)

I didn't know discussing this was against rules...

to check if its working properly just check your IP (for example here), click new identity and check again. If it's different it should work. Did you set up the connection properly in your browser? Please consider setting up your PC as a relay. The system only works if everyone donates some of their own bandwith
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

sounds like tor is working fine if it can't keep track of your referrals u silly goose.  and btw, pyramid schemes are usually scams anyway.

ban for advertising, you are using a referral link

Ok, I used the set up relaying thing, and I keep hitting the "new identity" button, but the IP address is still the same after refreshing the page or even opening a new window and trying it.

It's possible that my university could be blocking this somehow. I am, after all, on their tightly-monitored network.

Once again, I know next-to-nothing about all this, so thanks for the help

do you have the "Tor Button" add on for firefox?

are you running Privoxy as well?

Tor did the same thing to me until I ran Privoxy with it, (it should have come with the Vidalia bundle)

Yep Privoxy is running as well (installed that whole Vidalia bundle). However, I'll have to check on the Tor Button add-on. It said it came with the Vidalia bundle but it's not installed on my Firefox.

it would be in the lower right hand corner of firefox. make sure when you install it, it says TOR ENABLED of some shit. you'll notice a diffrence in how fast the pages load with tor actually running.
