An ASUS P5B is not bottlenecking at all in this case. And don't assume every computer build has to be made with lots of money. You can get very decent performance with smaller amounts of cash.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

If money is a huge issue, you're probably better off with a Wii.
As I said. RAM is the more of an urgent problem.VicktorVauhn wrote:
Um...I am gonna dissagree.
My last computer was a 2.4 P4, and while going from 1gig ram to 2 gig ram will really help a lot....in the end it will suck because the CPU isn't that great.
No. His motherboard has Socket LGA775. Your P4 was Socket 478, Brad's is 775.VicktorVauhn wrote:
One reason they say you need a new mother board is because the CPU socket for a P4 and a dual core chip is different...you can't just upgrade the to a new CPU.
No. He will do fine with what I and Max pointed out.VicktorVauhn wrote:

ASUS P5B as he said earlier. DDR2-800. Support for 45nm C2D.CommieChipmunk wrote:
wait, if you have a P4, do you have DDR ram or DDR2 ram. Because if you're planning on upgrading to core 2 duo eventually, you'll have to buy a new motherboard and DDR2 ram anyway (assuming you have DDR) so you're essentially throwing money away if you get DDR ram now.
yes, the motherboard is OK. It doesn't have loads of the fancy features that other boards have, but will run C2Ds well. Overclocking possibilities might be a bit limited on that board but unless you are going for the super high clocks it should be sufficient.DeathUnlimited wrote:

This is truth. Many other things in this thread aren't too helpful. P4 CPUs are decent if used correctly. I don't know how many times I can point this out. What people (still) seem to think of when they hear 'P4' is the Willamette. The very first generation of P4, which sucked major ass. The performance of the P4 improved greatly with the second generation, Northwood, and another 10% with Prescott and FSB800. His CPU can propably be clocked beyond 4GHz if it's over 2.6GHz. I run a P4 3GHz on 4.2, and even on 3GHz, my graphics card (Basically a 7600GT) is the limiting factor. For games, even superclocked P4s will do fairly good.DeathUnlimited wrote:

@Op: A lot of talk here, but the option Max pointed and which you chose to believe is the right. You will already notice difference when you get the ram, and the CPU finally will make much more use of the 8800GT. Ignore the posts that say you should upgrade this and that, some people have money hanging in trees, unlike you.
Yeah ok, but I need s swiss site. I'm thinking of this. http://pixel-informatique.ch/ bottom of page!unnamednewbie13 wrote:
Notate the inflated expenses accrued for upgrades in comparison to the superior performance of a whole unit that will ultimately cost less. On paper. You can nickel and dime yourself to death with upgrades, and most of the time anything you get is going to be bottlenecked by 80% of the rest of your rig.Bradt3hleader wrote:

If you're going to ask for help, stop second-guessing everything, or just ask your friends. RAM's the biggest issue here, but you could use a better CPU if you want to see justice done for your 8800GT. Your motherboard's edging on the old side, but that's an upgrade that can wait.
If money is a huge issue, you're probably better off with a Wii.
And I'll save up for another CPU.
I've spent over 4000 francs doing upgrades and shit to my PC. And of course I could have goten two good gaming PCs for that but my parents don't see it that way.

Or explain to them that it's like a car. At the point where you're constantly replacing parts here and there to keep the thing running satisfactorily, you might as well have sold it and bought another.
Or do odd jobs around your neighborhood and make your own money to subsidize computer-related purchases.
Something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6883103133) could play BF2/2142 with contemptuous ease. You could rip out the video card it comes with and replace it with your 8800GT.It can be difficult to explain this to people until they see it on paper.VicktorVauhn wrote:

http://pixel-informatique.ch/produits.p … ;cat=11731 - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Great value. The P5B will not let you do extreme OC, but you might be able to hit the 4GHz mark.Bradt3hleader wrote:

Looks perfect, great price. But how can I tell what the one I already have is? Incase it's just as good or better....or shit.DeathUnlimited wrote:

I also have something called "Speed Fan" but I can't figure it out. Here are the readings: System average 37°C - CPU 50°C - AUX 122°C WTF? - HD0 39°C

Once again I fuck up, can't I do anything right FFS. I said I want an Nvidia 8800GT and the PC guys gives me a 256mb one...which I though was the only type...
Yes, should be able to do that just fine in CoD4, even with AA & AF.Bradt3hleader wrote:

Yes. 256MB isn't that big of a deal, it'll only become apparent in higher resolutions.DeathUnlimited wrote:

I am jealous, I want your graphics card. I won't be able to upgrade mine for a very long time.
Also, I'll cover for DU:
P3 (0.93GHz)
nVidia GeForce 4MX 64MB
46GB hard drive (Who needs more?)
384MB SDRAM
Ball mouse
Dunno keyboard
Windows 2000
And if you either oc your current CPU, or get a new one, it's gonna be fine.
PUNK. I'm not using that crappy stuff.Freezer7Pro wrote:

Shouldn't be too hard. Just yank the VCore up to 1.6, decrease the multiplier to 14 and the FSB to 286. Make sure the RAM isn't all too clocked. Should work if your CPU is the same stepping as mine. CPU-Z screen, please.Bradt3hleader wrote:
