Cheers,

Today, April 08, 2008 I shut down my computer, only to find that updates awaited me. As a cheerful Microsoft lackey would, I chose to install the update. After I returned to the computer hours later, and attempted a restart...I was met with an instant restart within three seconds of reaching desktop.

To fix this, I booted safe mode and tried a system restore to earlier that day. Now, I cannot boot to windows in either safe mode or any other mode due to the following error: "The image iertutil.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum."

So I am stuck. I installed the updates like a bloody dipsh*t, and got raped for it. Thanks microsoft.

If anybody has any advice, I would appreciate it. I am about to attempt the recovery console.

PS: winxp pro sp2

use a windows Xp install disk

choose R for repairs (do NOT choose reinstall option unless you got a backup)

you'll get some kind of dos command. Choose windows XP or something (just type 1)

Then type: "fixboot"

try rebooting. Doesn't work? repeat and try chkdsk -r

doesn't work sfc /scannow

if that doesn't work, reinstall I guess.

fixboot, fixmbr, and the like require a device name? I have no idea what to put there

I may try to replace the specific file with recovery console...that is a bit beyond me but I will attempt to do it that way first. It will be the second reinstall in a week, bout ready to switch to Mac... sad i know

update:

I believe I found out how to fix it. I must repair the eirtutil file thru the recovery console. However, since I'm using a raid array the Windows Xp rec. console cannot see raid arrays unless the drivers are loaded from a 3.5 inch floppy. Sadly, in 2008 you still can't fix your bloody pc without one.

for the record, I actually have to go buy a 3.5 in order to fix microsucks update rape.

Progress at least

Can you use a usb cd drive (or thumb drive) instead of a floppy?

What kind of Drivers do you need cause I have a RAID array and I have yet to make a back up disk. Should get on it soon :S

I have to use an A drive, usb floppy/thumb/cd drives won't work. I think they may work with vista though.

The raid drivers are from the nvidia chipset drivers. I yanked the legacy set out of that package and put them onto a floppy. This process works to load the raid drivers, but strangely enough I cannot get into recovery console due to an admin password. I used an alienware image cd to restore my pc last time, and now using a regular WinxpPro cd counts as "oem" so there is an admin password goofup.

more problems hehe
