So my pc works fine, I can boot with or without the router on and switch it on whenever, but when I turn the router off my pc crashes Not a BSOD, just a system freeze/hang.

Help please

That's bizarre.  Most don't, but does your router possibly have drivers that need to be installed?  If the OS is crashing, it must be a software problem... if it's not drivers, who knows.  Could be ethernet card drivers also.

some software doing something with upnp, try turning that off on your router see if it still crashes.

According to my traffic monitor nothing is communicating with the internet at the time, although I have ports open from previous connections and for my router. Router doesn't need drivers afaik. I think the ethernet drivers are ok although I'll reinstall them.

I have now discovered that turning the router back on restores the system, and then if I turn it off again the system freezes again
I did a hard reset after one of these hangs and my overclock settings reverted to default, although this has only happened once in about 5 hard resets

This is the new computer I built for my parents so could it be the new motherboard's ethernet controller?

Sounds like a Bios issue to me. Look for bios update to the mobo.

That, and does the same thing happen if you just unplug the ethernet cable?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
