US shamed by Mandela terror link

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has asked for "embarrassing" travel restrictions on Nelson Mandela and South African leaders to be lifted.
A bill has been introduced in the US Congress to remove from databases any reference to South Africa's governing party and its leaders as terrorists. The African National Congress (ANC) was designated as a terrorist organisation by South Africa's old apartheid regime. At present a waiver is needed for any ANC leaders to enter the country. "It is frankly a rather embarrassing matter that I still have to waive in my own counterparts - the foreign minister of South Africa, not to mention the great leader, Nelson Mandela," Ms Rice told lawmakers in Washington.

Terrorism can be such a subjective thing, can't it?

Kinda sad that it's taken them this long to do anything about it, considering Mandela became president well over 10 years ago.

Not sure why he would be listed as a terrorist...... Did he commit terrorist acts?

Yep, hunger strikes and such.  Insurrection.  Political dissidance.  Mandela was a bad bad man, and a liberal.

Anti Government activity of any nature tends to be regarded as 'terrorism' unless it'd being carried out against a regime that your own Government disagrees with. Exactly why the US paid any attention to the opinions of the racist apartheid regime is beyond me though.

I would say terrorism is generally correctly used to classify action by a non-state backed organization presenting no reciprocal target.  That's just my interpretation really.

As to why the US would heed opinions of a racist regime - that's simple and the same reason they heed the opinions of anyone.  The opinions happen to be congruent to the agenda of the current US leadership.  Not saying that makes it OK by any means mind you ...

If I am not mistaken (and surely, correct me if I am), Mandela and the ANC were responsible for a number of 'terrorist' attacks in South Africa. I believe that these are excused because the ANC fought against a government that the world considered wrong or evil, but in essence, those who were 'terrorists' are now in power. It seems difficult that a government could be terrorists, instead of those who fight against governments being the terrorists. Too often guerrillas and freedom fighters are labeled as such. Are Mandela's acts inexcusable for being acts of terror (as defined by the United States)? Does he remain a terrorist years later, or was he never one because the government was discriminating against his people?
