So I bought my sexy new XFX 8800GT XXX edition and it is teh sex. However the bastards at XFX cut the wire which controls the speed so it is constantly at 100% which is bloody loud. After a few days of this I have to buy an aftermarket cooler because of the noise.

So... if any of you guys could point me in the right direction of one or if any of you have experiance with them then that would be appreciated.

ty dudes and as usual karma to all who help.

I would imagine it's because it will overheat horribly it it's allowed to go at any other speed.

Indeed. I assume the XXX is overclocked?

Thermalright HR-03 GT

But then you can have one PCI card max at the bottom of the mobo.

Cools the card like a motherfucker though, so you should be able to overclock the living shit out of it

yeah but seriously - the noise is unbearable.  if not to decrease the temps then at least the noise can be reduced.

and that dosen't have to have a fan attached? it works jsut as well without one?

edit: just seen more pics - are there any smaller coolers? i have the space but it takes up what looks like 2 more slots.

Thermalright v2=20€, SilenX 80x80x15(15mm not 25mm so it doesn't take another PCI slot) Fan Ixtrema Pro for 13€.
With this i get 40 degrees idle. Noise is not audible.

With an extra fan under the card that pushes cold air directly on to the cooler i get 30 degrees idle.

Cheap, silent, efficient.

yeah that looks like the best idea - thanks dude. obtw, did you have to buy the ram heatsinks seperately? cos i rad for others that you needed to.

zalman vf-1000 works well too. Keep my SLI'ed overclocked 8800GT nice and cool without making a lot of noise. The hr-03 is a way better cooler, but it's too big for most. If you get the vf-1000 make sure to get some extra ram heatsinks. There aren't enough included with the vf-1000 to cool all ram and the power convertors. Getting some extra thermal tape won't hurt either

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

This one is good also. What i don't like about it: you get Zalman fan mate with it and that means extra spaghetti in your PC. I have my fan always on 100% and its really silent so i wouldn't need a fan controller. Second: you can put your own vent on V2 or HR-3GT, whatever ventilator you like. If the Zalman vent dies... With v2 you get enough ram heatsinks +2 spare ones. You need another one though to cool all the mosftets as well (this is optional not a necessity). I bought Thermaltakes copper ramsinks, 5€.

You can mount it so it wraps around the card, leaving the cooler on top.

What he said. Here's the installation guide. It features both types of installation:

dual card cooler that's quieter and vents out the back.  i would get a HR-03 GT or a VF1000, but they leave the hot air at the bottom of my case.

So you're gonna stay with stock cooling solution?

perhaps...if only the HR-03 GT was on Newegg.

edit: holy hell, it's damn expensive.  come on, should i really bother with an aftermarket cooler when i can just use the stock one?

If you are gonna Sli them you better hurry.

Since it now launched the 9800 GTX, Nvidia plans to kill the 8800GTS series. After all, both cards are based on the same G92 chip, but the new and bigger 9800 GTX supports Hybrid Power, Three-way SLI and has a bigger cooler.

The performance of both cards is really close and therefore Nvidia had to decide to phase out the Geforce 8800 GTS.

Currently, 8800GTS sells for about €185, while the 9800GTX sells for €240 or more. It is very questionable to decide if the price difference is worth upgrading, but we guess more people will get a 9800GTX simply because of the bigger number.

If you are an overclocker than you better get the 9800 GTX-based card, as it will get you to 800MHZ GPU speed. If you want to replace your 8800 GTX the 9800 GTX at €250 makes for the perfect upgrade match.
And true what Airwolf says. Thats why i have 2 vents at the bottom of the case so the cold air passes the components and vents on top of the case to exaust hot air.

ay!

they're phasing out the GTSes?  i have to wait until May, my birthday, for one too, or else my parents won't let me buy one.

i am thinking of having them in SLI, but if they're going to be out of stock, guess i can't, can i?  in fact, the eVGA GTS i was looking at on Newegg is out of stock.

might just be the 8800GT for me then.

edit: yeah, i have two 80mm fans as an intake blowing cool air towards the back of the case, where i have an open PCI slot and a slot fan.

Why not get a 9800GTX? They aren't that expensive.

$300 vs. $210 for the GTS and $180 for the GT is a big difference for me.
