reference Communism and Malthusian theory

Conflict is the largest area of creating advancement.  That is why I've long held the theory that the end of the cold war was one of the worst things that could possibly have happened for not only the USSR and the USA specifically, but the world at large.
Wow. That is the most complex way of war mongering I have ever heard.
That's my point, there was no open fighting between the actual combatants.  There were hot spots that were pawns in the larger picture (Afghanistan, Vietnam) but there was no OPEN fighting.  If that's war mongering, so be it.  But I think the Cold War was one of the greatest periods of human advancement in our history and have long mourned its end.

That is so very true.  Amazing when you really think about it.

I don't really agree on that - the race did bring alot of good / bad things but it also had the potential of totally ruining a country. The USSR was bankrupt, and their standards of living are alot better now than it was back then.

Hell, it had the potential to totally ruin a planet, let alone a country.  I'm not arguing that it wasn't dicey, risky, or without side-effects.

The technologies risen from the cold war are not limited to the Western world nor are their benefits.  While certain aspects may have improved post 1989, I would say they have declined over all.  Could the situation have been more ideal?  Certainly.  I maintain that the absolute value of things has shifted negatively due to the cessation of the Cold War, however.
