It's a doozy so bare with me and I really appreciate any input. My parents computer was infected by a virus, don't know how but it was a really nasty one. I ran scans with all kinds of anti-spyware, virus, ets... I eventually had to reformat the damn computer. All is well for a  few weeks and for some reason now when the computer comes back from the screen saver or from sleep mode or anything to that nature the computer will not open ANY webpage. After a restart it works fine. I am on DSL with constant on connection. Please help, I've been in the IT field for a couple years and have not been able to figure this out! So far I have updated chipset, bios, and will here shortly re-install nic drivers and ran more scans. Any other suggestions?

Well the first thing to check to see if its a third party screen savor.  If it is uninstall it... if its not turn screen savors off for now.  Unless the problem happens else were as well.

Next time this happens and the internet doesn't work, try this:

Start > Run
Type in "cmd" and hit ok
type "ipconfig /release" then enter
type "ipconfig /renew" then enter
Once it brings back your ip and stuff, see if you can connect. If you can, then it's your internet, if you can't then its something else messing with it. Just one more thing to weed out.

it sounds like sleep mode is disabling your ethernet port for power saving and not turning it back on.  check the advanced power settings to make sure your network card is not turned off during sleep mode.
