A theory I heard about why FAA grounded planes ...

A relative of mine working in DC has a theory (or has heard somewhere) that the FAA has embellished this inspection order to ground jets for another ulterior reason : to conserve fuel in the face of an immediate and catastrophic fuel shortage. He has also stated that there is going to be some big news this Monday or Tuesday and possible a series of events that is going to lead to chaos.

Comments? Holes? Links to others thinking this and explaining it in detail?

IMO it would be too big of an event to actually keep a secret for this long. Not to mention: how much would they actually be conserving?

Doubt it. MD-80's are old planes. This stuff happens more than you think. This all goes back to the Southwest Airlines BS. It is typical FAA over reaction. They would not give MD-80 operators the "normal" time to complete inspections like this. They are trying to save face.

One of those theories that everyone loves to believe, but unlike new Apple, global catastrophe doesn't wait until "Monday or Tuesday" to give its big reveal. If anyone knew anything that would "lead to chaos," especially on the scale you're talking about, word would have probably gotten out.

Yeah I agree with your perspective. The relative that told me this is coming off of a 20+ years of 2-4 liter a day diet soda drinking habit and quitting all caffeine, etc ... plus he is a mathematician. Maybe these facts are effacing his thought process
