The Olympics should have never gone to China in the first place. Pressure should have been put on the delegates and politicians back then instead of asking athletes now not to go.

However anything that makes China upset is usually a good thing for everybody else...

What's funny is when people think that because I criticize the Chinese government's policies, I somehow hate the Chinese people.

Idiocy is a disease more widespread than all the other diseases of the world.

Who wants to bet most of these protesters can't locate Tibet on the map?

that said, Tibet is a huge swath of China's territory, and I'm willing to bet they are about as likely to give it up as America would be to give up Alaska to the natives who live there.
Yeah it's right next to a big DESERT where nobody lives.  The Tibetans are in a way screwing themselves with their non-violence.  The Chinese are nothing like the British, if they have a Ghandi-like peaceful thing, they'll just bring in tanks and shoot 'em all.  China ≠ Human Rights.

I remember not long ago someone was polling if protesters actually made any difference.  Well, I guess it's safe to say this is a perfect example of how it does matter.  And as usual, the unique style only the San Francisco Bay Area can bring, the tour was plenty disruptive and decorated:

http://cbs5.com/local/golden.gate.bridge.2.693783.html

In San Francisco on Monday, before the torch’s arrival on its only stop in the United States, several protesters scaled the vertical suspension cables of the Golden Gate Bridge and unfurled two large banners reading, “One World, One Dream,” and “Free Tibet 08.” At least seven people were arrested.

And for you ignoramuses (cameron poe), the SF Bay Area protesters absolutely know where Lhasa is, what the favorite color of the Dalai Lama is, and probably the names and sexual orientation of each Chinese commander laying siege to Tibet.

Just because you guys don't know jack, doesn't mean protesters are just doing it because others are.  These are angry, sophisticated, well educated people protesting with passion.  I drive here and see the rallies, see the free tibet bumper stickers on their subarus, and I see the marches.  It's not just ignorant kids trying to get out of school.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The Olympic torch's only stop in North America turned into a game of hide and seek on Wednesday as San Francisco abruptly changed the route, angering both China supporters and protesters.

Thousands of people converged along the announced scenic Embarcadero waterfront route. But after the opening ceremony, the first runner was flanked by blue-clad Chinese security officials and carried the torch into a warehouse. The torch eventually turned up miles away.

"We were cheated, because I think the meaning of the relay was to show the whole world that our country is hosting the Olympics," said Michael Huo, 30, a Chinese engineer working at a Silicon Valley start-up company.
I'm not sure exactly why.. but I loled. I can imagine a large crowd of protestors trying to keep up with the changing route... like a chase scene from Chips (With the song ""Flight of the Bumblebee" in the background)..

The idea behind pro-China protesters amuses me.  Do they carry signs that say things like "oppression is good for the soul" or "proud to be a pawn of a fascist government"?

All I know is that both the pro-Tibet and the pro-China protesters are probably using materials made in China for their protests.

Well then it would seem that at least the Pro-China peeps are true to their cause. There are certain cultural aspects of China that many Chinese people are proud of (as well they should be). Holding a Chinese flag doesn't necessarily mean they support drowning infant girls in rice paddies or even the government for that matter. To think it must only be support for oppression is rather narrow minded.

I'm sorry but... as long as China is being run by basically a corporate fascist state, I can't see much to be proud of about China.

You aren't Chinese and probably don't have family there. So yea, that's understandable. The Chinese have contributed significantly to mankind as well. To say otherwise would be an admission of ignorance to history. I'm sure those Chinese supporters are inspired by the people who make up their nation. Do you really think "proud to be a pawn of a fascist government" is their battle cry?.. I'm sorry but that's just epic failure in logic.

I was being sarcastic when I said the "pawn" thing.  I know what you're getting at, and yes, I have no connection to China.  I'm just reiterating that it seems like a shithole to me.  It may have been a great culture in ancient times, but in the modern world, it mostly represents what I would consider evil.

Don't these protestors have a job or something?

Geez, go do something productive.  Don't try to attract attention and make yourselves look important just so you can get a book deal in the future or something.

By the way, they had one of these lame protests here over in Toronto and I swear to God, everyone in that protest was seriously a sub <$20 000 income individual (judging from what they are wearing and their vocabulary).
Alpha as fuck.

If the protesters have any integrity then they'll cease buying anything manufactured in China rather than participating in these pointless rallies.

Reminds me of Peter Griffin when he wanted to protest outside the new Quohog Wal-Mart and realised he'd need wood, nails, paint and cardboard to make his protest signs... "Hey, we can get all those things in Wal-Mart"!

I can not believe I am agreeing with Poe about something.  Also, it does not create a good image to scream and yell at someone on the street who is simply happy that their country has the honor of hosting the olympics.  Arguing in the streets as to their worthiness looks like good news material, but does anyone think anything positive can actually come from the experience?

I guess the protesters think something will come out of it... I mean if you're going to have a controversial object carried though a city, San Francisco is the place to have a protest/riot. Sad part is that I bet 90% of those protesters don't know where Tibet is on a map.
