If you want a qualified source, ask FEOS.  He might support what I've said here. I don't know.  I just know he works for the Pentagon.

The whole "fighting them over there, so we don't have to fight them over here" argument is emotive and not based on any sort of reason.
Hmmm...In about 8 years we had two attacks on the WTC, one naval ship attacked, two US emabassies bombed and hundreds killed, and a military housing area in Saudi.  In about 6 1/2 years since all that ended, there has be NO attacks like that outside of the warzones.  Now, you may not like to hear that, but those are facts.
no successful attacks...

Our staying in Iraq has little to do with our ability to defuse attacks here.  It just means our intelligence agencies are getting better at thwarting attacks now.  The fact that we haven't been successfully attacked in the last few years on our own soil would actually be a better way of supporting the Patriot Act than of the Iraq occupation.
Exactly.

The only thing being in Iraq is possibly doing to prevent attacks on US soil is providing easier American targets closer to where the extremists are which leaves them little time to get round to anything else.

But ultimately, you just have to look at the numbers. More than 4000 Americans killed in Iraq. That's more than all the Americans killed by Islamic terrorists ever all put together.

Better we kill them there then here.

Imagine if they were instead bombing Malls and blowing up Elementary School buses in your home town instead?

No don't get me wrong, I don't like innocent Iraqis dying as much as the next guy...its just that part of the world has been fighting like this for eons.  They have right themselves...Islam needs a reformation.
I always here this nonsensical argument time and time again..."fight them over there instead of over here".

Here's a little dose of reality for you: adequate security checks on domestic flights would have prevented the 9/11 attacks. Increased domestic security has been the key element in preventing further attacks of a similar nature. Fighting a war in a country with little or no AQ links to begin with serves no purpose in the prevention of 9/11 style attacks. The 9/11 attackers were from Saudi Arabia for fuck's sake.

Put yourself in the mind of an Islamic extremist... "I hate America, I want to kill as many American infidels as I can in the name of Allah, I want to further the cause of Al Qaeda, I will travel to the US and kill thousands of American infidels...oh no hang on, I know, I'll go to Iraq instead and take on one of the most sophisticated militaries in the world and get my ass handed to me."

If I were an America-hating extremist, I'd give Iraq a wide berth and get myself on a plane to one of the major US cities.

What's the point in killing a couple of terrorists if your methods inspire more people to become terrorists?
Exactly, and that is why Europe rolled over and spread its legs for Nazism.
I think you'll find the Nazis lost.

Or maybe instead of going to the trouble of travelling to America to kill Americans its much easier to kill them in Iraq.
Either way they achieve their objective of killing Americans so who wins exactly?
You have soldiers dying instead of civilians, probably at a higher rate.

Securing Americas borders and investing in intel work instead of invading Iraq would most likely have been much more effective and not enraged the whole middle east thus providing more converts for Al Qaeda rather than less.
