He wasn't a soldier in WWII idiot, he was in the Hitler Youth.

And that makes little difference, since practically every child in Germany (up to 18) was in the Hitler Youth.

IIRC, he was assigned to a Artillery unit. Again, pretty common practice in Germany at that time, especially from around 1942 onwards.
