Just wondering, if a mobo has DDR ram, does the graphics card also need to be DDR? or can they be different (as in DDR2)?

video ram has no relation to motherboard ram, so if you know that the video card can work on the mobo then don't worry it.

Graphics card RAM does not have to match system RAM, no. As everyone else said.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The memory for your video card is for the GPU , it's were your GPU draws memory from, for graphics and rendering ,  your other memory is for your computer , motherboard to operate OS , programs ect. combined them both together you get a happy meal

He's gonna get a new mobo from Zimmer
He's gonna get an 8600GT from NooBesT
He's gonna get a P4 from me.

What other community arranges new computers for their members in despair? BF2s is so much win.
