Alright so I currently have an x1950pro PCIE16 but it's a lil old and showing it's age, and now I can get a fucking 8800 GTS for like $140, damn shit !

My current card measures at around 8.5inches , and I use a mATX case because I am a cheap slacker, and it fits perfectly, but is an 8800GTS any bigger than that ( I have open slots so the whole two slot thing doesn't matter)

and my PSU is 500~ rated watts, and 32amps on the two rails combined, should I be set?

Your PSU sounds a little weak, it might make it, depending on how many HDs you have and what CPU you got. As for the case size issue, post pics.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I would go with at least a 550-650 psu , just to be on the safe side

Both of you are idiots, 500w is more than enough, I'm running dual 88GTS G92's in SLI with a e8400 on 580, for a 88GTS(doesnt matter if it's a 320MB or 512MB), 450 would even suffice, your set.

What brand is your PSU? Brand is a major issue in PSUs. A cheap 600w can be just as bad as a brand-name 400w. Plus, 580 =/= 500. Plus, we don't know anything about the rest of his rig. If he has a Q6600 or Pentium D, or Pentium 4, his CPU will drain a lot more power than your E8400.

There, Hiper. Good brand until they blow up. My guess is that he's got the PSU that came with the case. MECTallica, care to enlighten us?

8800GTS requires at least 400W with combined 26 amps in the 12V rails.

Whether you have enough power or not, depends on the other stuff you have inside.

amd64 4000+ socket 939, 1 HDD, 1 dvd drive/ 1cd drive, and the PSU is a COOLER MASTER, yes not that great of a brand but it's fine IMO

Yup, that should be fine.

You should be fine. Now measure the space the gpu would have. 8800GTS is around 9 inches long.

as for the GTS - by $140 you mean the 320 mb and 640 mb versions, right? cause they're shit.  you want one based on the G92 core - denoted by 512 mb.

Yeah, the other one is an older version. And therefore doesn't perform as well.

and if the 8800GTS 512MB is over your budget, you should buy the 8800GT. The 8800GT outperforms the 8800GTS 320mb AND 640MB.

ah okay nice . I heard good things about the 8800 GT but wasn't sure if it really outperformed the GTS, 150$ isnt out of my budget

Will that 256mb 8800gt outperform an 8800gts? I think you might be thinking about the 512mb version.

lol. My Hiper Type-R 580w greeted me with a blue screen, then a very large crackling noise. I had no other PSUs lying about - now that was annoying.

Anyway, size shouldn't be an issue. Your mATX motherboard width will be 9.6", and as far as I know the 8800GTS isn't over 9.6" in length. Just make sure there is room to plug in the power cable

Why don't you be a bit more useful and come up with a link like this, wot:

http://www.schrockinnovations.com/powercalc.php

It's a little old, but gives you a rough outline more specific to your computer than your CPU and video cards. A call to the MFG might also clear up some questions.

An overclocked 8800GT can perform as well as a stock GTS, but be aware that the GT fan is single slot and that the core may become very hot.  that being said, the fan will rev up to keep heat down and it will be noisy.  the GTS has a better cooler and slightly moar stream processors (128 vs. 112).

finally, if you decide to get the GT, do not get the 256 mb version.  you're going to want the 512 mb version.
