Question on international shipping (importing PC parts)

Hey guy's, I have been looking round at parts for a new machine, (of which I dont need any help specing) am confident in my choices , it is to do with, as the title said, importing them.

I had a discussion with a friend of mine, he was talking about doing the very same thing, of buying parts on an American website (in this case tiger direct), and importing them in. Even with VAT added onto the parts, there are still some sizeable gains to be had, for example.

(am aware there is no power supply and graphics card in that list btw).

Over £1000 for some fairly high end parts, the very same, off tiger would cost me $1,344.95

If you take the $1,344.95, add on the 17.5% VAT of the UK, and shift it into British Pounds, I worked that out as being just under, the £800 mark, so there you go, £200 which would go into the power supply and graphics card (n ahem, OS).

My question is, how much, do you think, it would cost to actually ship that gear in. I would check it myself but, in order to do that, you need to have your credit details and that filled in, and, all I am after, is a rough estimate. If anyone has ever done this, could they give me a rough idea of how much the shipping cost was? And any customs charges. Any input would be appreciated

Edit, subtract the case, new price would be $1000 and would then work out as just under £600 inc VAT for the:

XFX 790 ultra
500GB segate
OCZ DDR3 1800Mhz
Intel Q9300

You need to factor in:

* Customs duty - if the amount of duty is £7 and over.
* Import VAT - if the value of the goods is £18 and over.

Get your mate to order it, delivered to his address and then for him to send it to you labelled as a 'gift' - that way you don't pay import duty.

(actually, this might not work for something of that kind of value, but it works for smaller items)

If I remember rightly that only applies to items under £30 value, if that got stopped and checked he'd be in for some serious penalties as well as all the charges.

Yeah. you can do that to small items. sometimes. Some guy tried to do that here in Finland for $1000 CPU he ordered from US and he had to go to the customs, open the package and the customs slapped a heavy charge on his hand and said kthxbye.

It will be expensive cos of the case. The heavier things you order, the more money you will need to pay for shipment.

mmmm good point. I suppose I could drop the case though, since, I did find a UK retailer, selling it for about the same as tiger, although, even with a third postage cost, I would assume that would work out less than shipping the TJ07 all the way from the states.

Edit: £200, and free postage for the TJ07

So if we consider the parts minus the case, whats the concencious?

Add it up. 2KG for motherboard, 1.2 for HDD, 300g for RAM and 500g for CPU.
In total, I would think 4KG. So I take a rought estimate at £60.

Anyway, you do know that TigerDirect will not allow you to purchase those items from overseas? They have their equivalent store ( misco.co.uk ) for the UK. So they will deny your order - at least, I think they will, I was going to buy from them but ended up purchasing through misco.

Rubbish. I bought from Tiger ( Misco, Tiger branch in the UK ) and it came right on time in perfect packaging and I could track my number. I would buy from them again if they had something that I wanted.

That did occur to me, but, there is the option for internation address's, and, it alots for the option to ship to pretty much any country you care to mention. I had a look on misco, and, there selection is pretty, well, pathetic, they dont seem to stock any of the 45nm processors for example. So, I wonder if that turned out to be right, that I had to buy from there UK division, what they would charge since they dont seem to carry it (in the UK).

Tiger (actual Tiger, not Misco) have an absolutely terrible reputation on all US OC forums. Misco on the other hand I've heard pretty good things about.

Even if you found a site that'll ship it to you, you're better off getting it here. With vat, custom taxes, and delivery you're looking at a much reduced saving plus a much larger chance for damage to your rather fragile components. And I'm not sure how it affects RMA policies and such. What I do is, wait for any relatives and friends you have in America to come over on holiday, and task them with bringing your shopping with them

btw www.ebuyer.com has your processor and motherboard for £10 less each Generally ebuyer stacks up much better against american sites than ocuk.

I've bought thousands of dollars of components from Tiger Direct over many years and have never had a problem. For me at least, they process and ship faster than NewEgg, but their prices tend to be a bit higher. TD charges a lot for shipping, so I usually go with Newegg.

Point: There's nothing wrong with Tiger Direct (from my experience).
