More Ram=no boot. Wat?

I have a k8m800m chipset MB in my computer with a 754 pin 2800+ sempron cpu with 1 gig ram and a ATI 9600 mobility GPU. According to all the spec sheets I can find I should be able to go to 2 gig. So, I order the exact same ram as I already have installed, yes the exact same. I gto it today and installed it. First try, nothing. Swap slots, nothing. Remove new ram, boots fine. Move original ram to other slot, boots fine. Pull out old ram and install just new ram, boots fine. Move to other slot, boots fine. Add old one back in, nothing. Wat?

Summary, both chips boot normally by themselves. When paired they will not boot. Anybody got any ideas on what to try or how to fix it?

sounds like your motherboard isn't recognizing the other ram, usually it would say your memory has been changes then it would configure it , check your bios

Clear the BIOS, there's usually either a switch or a battery hatch somewhere. Had to do that with my laptop when adding RAM.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Yeah, I have seen that many times. I swap ram with wifes computer all the time so she can work faster.

Oh, and also try letting it just stand with the power on for a couple of minutes. Might be somekind of checking procedure.

Yea as freezer said clear your bios. If you had custom ram timings they don't always carry over when you add more ram.

Like when I added extra 2GBs to mine I had to bump mine down from 4-4-4-12 T1 to 4-4-4-12 T2.

After though: I know socket 754 does NOT support dual channel. Usually that don't effect the computer working period but its just and after thought.

I had 2 sticks of 512 mb in there a couple months ago. Computer was faster then. Wifes computer is a priority because she makes money with it. No not that way.

I didn't know 754 wasn't able to support dual channel. Damn.

You might have to update your BIOS for it to recognize 2GB, maybe the version you have is outdated and can only recognize 1GB, and a later version of the BIOS allowed more memory to be used, so that is what the spec sheets say.

When I get home in the morning I will attempt to update the bios.

I guess my question now would be how do I search for the correct bios update? Is it based on the bios version or is it chipset dependent?

You probably have to search on the site of the manufacctor of your motherboard.
The BIOS is indeed motherboard type specific.

This is surprisingly very popular problem. Mostly happens with nforce chipsets. Board fails to boot when having many ram sticks. I got 20 BSOD loop in the first bootup when I had 4 sticks of ram on nforce board.

Yeah, that would be nice, but what is the point of upgrading the MB with another 754 one? I am trying to be on the mega cheap here. I have a $25 GPU, $22 RAM, $22 CPU, $20 MB (at best), on board audio, and the case I think I would have to pay someone $5 to take it from me. I could drop $250 and build a whole new one that is twice as fast, but alas, I am stuck with this.

I just want my 2 gig of RAM to work.

Update: Struggled for over an hour finding the updated bios. Flash went well. Same problem still. I am stuck.

1. Try running your memory at lower frequency.
2. Try loosening the timings.
3. Try increasing the memory voltage.

Some combination of those things should get the system running with all the RAM recognised.

I unfortunately have no way of messing with the timings. Or do I and don't know it? It not just doesn't recognize it, it won't even boot with the second stick. I have run 2 sticks of 512 with wonderful results. These 1 gig'ers are kicking my butt.

Whats the model of your mother board? I've tried searching the chipset but pulls up MSI audio drivers.

It could just be very pick on memory. It may not like that RAM when you stick in 2GBs. From what I can see the board supports max 2GBs(2x 1GB).

Last post for this.

Found out that this motherboard is very picky about high and low density. I had looked it up before I bought the last round to make sure it could take high density ram and it was ok. Now that I went to 2 gig it is now picky. I called the tech support for the computer and they said this coomputer uses high denstity fine till you want to go to 2 gig. Guess I am stuck with 1.25 gig (using old 256mb). Now I have to ship the new card back.
