A young Iraqi who was accidentally shot by a British soldier is to get £2 million from the Ministry of Defence - a sum far greater than that paid to its own injured troops.

The unnamed man, who was 13 at the time, suffered severe spinal injuries when a soldier he had befriended dropped his gun, causing the weapon to discharge.

He later moved to the UK for treatment and took a civil claim for negligence through the High Court.
The Ministry of Defence has insisted his case was a one-off, but its bumper payout is likely to fuel further debate over the level of compensation for wounded service personnel.
Under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme for injured troops, the maximum lump sum a wounded serviceman or woman can receive is £285,000.
However the MoD rejected comparisons with the scheme, pointing out that its compensation also provided a lifetime income.

There were also fears among opposition MPs that it could set a precedent, opening the way for further big compensation claims by Iraqis against the British Government. The award is far higher than anything paid to Iraqis who made compensation claims against the British through the Iraqi courts
"It is not a precedent, it is an exceptional case. It is not expected that there are any other cases of such severity," an MoD spokesman said.

The MoD explained that the high payout reflected both the costs of caring for him for the rest of his life and the fact that the MoD had accepted that the shot which injured him was a "negligent discharge".

Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman Vince Cable warned that other Iraqis may now try to take action through the courts in the UK.

"The Government claims that this is a completely unique case, but it is very difficult to believe that that is the case," he told Channel 4 News.
"If Iraqis were able to get access to British courts, they would clearly be entitled to much higher levels of compensation, based on this precedent.
He added: "The costs of that could be very, very considerable indeed, adding to all the other costs of the Iraq war."

Should he have been paid? Or was he just a casualty of war?

He should have been paid. He was unarmed, and a non-hostile civilian. Why would he not deserve compensation? He is now a cripple because of the solider dropping his weapon.

why not pay him ? it's not like he was "normal" collateral damage. The soldier mishandled his weapon, resulting in the discharge, which crippled the boy for life.

Yeah, he definitely deserved compensation, nobody is arguing that. It's just a shame that the MoD don't treat their own just as well, I think that's what the article is trying to point out.

If I was that Iraqi kid I'd get myself and my family out of that hellhole because every Insurgent from Kurdistan to Basra is going to be going after him/his family for that cash!

True dat.

If someone offered me 2million to be a cripple I wouldn't take it. Fuck I wouldn't take 100million. He deserves the money, solder made a fuck up, not the kid.
It is a disgrace however, that the solders fighting the ME get treated like shit when they get hit. The money they are given to look after themselves and their families after they have been badly injured is less than the average sexual harassment case.

2 million quid isn't going to make him walk again. Poor guy, shitty situation...for the soldier too I guess, it's not like he was trying to blow him away or anything, it was an accident.

he is an innocent victim and deserve the compensation. Though 2M is quite a large sum seeing as injured British soldiers don't even get that much. But he was a civilian and deserves it

I would also like to point out that people join the armed forces voluntarily, and willfully accept the risk for their lifes. It's not like we're sending conscripts over there.

That being said, I have seen reports indicating that the US Armed Forces could do more to take care of their wounded veterans. There seems to be some room for improvement....
