I'm in the market for a laptop. My desktop, as awesome as it is, has no portability. E.g. when I go to my dad's house and I want to play WiC, I am unable to because the only computer asides from my PS3 is his crappy IBM laptop.

I don't need something that can run Crysis full blast, but I would like it to have a relatively good service life. AKA not a crappy-ass 8600M which somehow is not much better than the thing it was supposed to replace.

Price is a deciding factor. I'd also like the laptop to not be butt-ugly. Being able to get it with Windows XP is a plus, but Vista-only will work as well.

Any suggestions on companies or specific models? Sony VAIOs are nice but so damn expensive, especially considering what goes into them.

We just got a Sony VAIO a few weeks ago and it came loaded with so much crap on it and no vista discs so it ended up crashing and completely dying after less than a week.  But maybe that was just a bad one...

Now we have a new HP laptop (I can't remember the model off the top of my head) and it works really well, far better than the VAIO ever did.

Vaio's look damn nice but yeah they're well overpriced so go for looks if u can afford it

As an alternative DELL XPS M series (lolnoob etc.) are actually very nice laptops, with good gaming power.

Lookie here.

If I hadn't just bought a new HP a year ago, I would have that bad boy.

Damn, $1200 is a good deal for that. Maybe up the processor speed a bit more.

well, they are more pricy, but what have you heard about Alienware laptops?

I have a Dell E1505 myself. Not bad, but it might not be able to run the newer games as well.

My girlfriend just got an HP lappy for around $1k: Centrino dual core, 2 gb ram, 256 mb onboard video card (decent enough to run Sims 2 almost maxed, oddly enough), 160 gb HDD, good battery life, sexy looking.

I wouldn't disregard HP when looking, although, I'm not sure how well it'll game for you on the newer games. Fellow irc'ers have said that HP makes decent lappy's even if their desktops kinda suck.

Sims 2 runs on an ATI Radeon...
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Hence, my statement: I'm not sure how well it'll game for you on the newer games.

Take a look into the HP Pavilion DV* range. They are really sexy, my brother has one. Also, his nVidia GeForce 7400GO was actually able to handle Half-Life 2 on medium-high settings. Widescreen HL2 = 1000x better.
