I think pretty much everyone is going to tell you two things:

1. Build it yourself
2. Don't EVER buy ANYTHING from PC world

Building it yourself not only gives you a better understanding of whats in a PC, it also saves you money, and gets you more bang for your buck.

Upgrading, changing and system building really isn't that hard, just reading a few articles on the internet is about all you need, and ask people when you get stuck or aren't sure.

I'm sure someone here will help you pick out your components, and as long as all you've ordered all the right hardware, putting it together is really as simple as:

Every part has a notch on it so it can only go in one way round, and in one place. (Apart from the thermal paste, that goes on the smooth side of the processor NOT the pins...

Well you need to give us the info.

- OS
- Prefered Components
- ATI, NVIDIA?
- Intel, AMD?

Is it a high performance machine?
What is your budget?
Casual Gaming, or Heavy Gaming?

Things like that. Now hurry up and tell us

around £800...don't really want to go over that. Casual gamer...but I want a good machine. Also may need to edit video on it too.

Building computers might be easy for some people, but I have no idea where to begin. Anyone know a good way for a noob to learn? Like maybes a course or a book?

cheers

You beat me to the punch line!

Well, one of the great things about this forum is that is has a small community of people that go to great lengths to help others build their first computer. I can only emphasize that you really don't want to purchase computers from Dell, Packard, E-Machines, etc. etc. They are overpriced pieces of junk that are impossible to upgrade. Plus building your own computer really isn't that hard.

One thing I might suggest is checking on craigslist if they have listings in your area. It's not hard to find people on there selling pretty decent machines for a cheap price. Not to mention that if you're searching in your area, you'll be able to go check the thing out before you buy it. Just a thought.

Building yourself isn't to hard, all the parts are designed to fit one way, so you can't go wrong. Well except with the coolpaste , do NOT put it on the  CPU side where the pins are .

Now for 800 pounds you can build an really nice machine! I'll trow something together. Are you keeping your monitor , speakers, mouse and keyboard etc?

One minor issue with that build - the mobo is crossfire, but the video card is nVidia, so should you ever want to go SLi slimmy, you'd then need either a different mobo or two whole new video cards.

Summat like this would be a good alternate SLi mobo (it's also cheaper, and has more room for future improvement).

Or you could go with an ATI video card, such as that.

(oh, I personally would opt for the different mobo, btw)

Here's another question. How well are 'gaming computers' suited to video editing? Are they good at games and nothing else?

No, a "gaming machine" is generally powerful enough to do anything you throw at it. It'll edit videos fine.

Yeah, but if you do alot of video editing I'd suggest a quad core, although the difference going from a dual to a quad is barely noticeable in games. It's way faster when doing video encoding etc.

common knowledge once you've learnt it - doesn't really take much  effort. just read up on different bench-marks so you know where different componenets stand. of course, practical knowledge helps as well :p but it is so easy a baby could do it. tbh the numbers and codes and such are important but you don't need to know absolutely everything to blag your way through a situation. within a month you could know easily four times the amount of some fag who works at pc world.

qft, you can learn basically anything related to tech from bf2s alone.  not to mention checking out sites like TomsHardware or AnandTech.

My father always though that it was important to know how PCs work, so he made sure I always had nice PCs from the point where I could do some basic reading. In 15 years you do tend to pick up loads ...

hmmm, that sounds kinda creepy
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

In my case, about 20years of Speccy->BTEC Computer Studies->BEng(hons) 'Software' Engineering (in fact covered everything from mechanical, thru electrical, electronic and microprocessor, right through to software engineering) and several IT jobs (mostly software engineering), interspersed with owning, building and upgrading numerous PC's.
