Fury in France as Eurovision song choice has English lyrics
French language purists are furious as the country’s entry to this year’s Eurovision song contest has English lyrics. Sebastien Tellier’s song Divine has been chosen over Gallic rivals for the May 24 show, which draws millions of TV viewers. Francois-Michel Gonnot of the governing conservative party said he was utterly shocked and has been getting messages from French-speakers as far away as Vietnam and Africa, urging him to take a stand. A group that defends the French language said it was studying a response and one possibility would be to withhold TV taxes paid to public television for not fulfilling its mission.
Two questions...
1. What the hell are they doing with a song in English?
2. What the hell is Sebastien Tellier doing entering a song into Eurovision, he's actually quite good?
