An Abingdon, Maryland man seemed to have perfect what many people think about each time they go through a toll booth.

Frank Maier had dodged paying tolls 633 times. Police say Maier owes the Delaware Transportation department almost $5000 in unpaid tolls and another $30,000 in fines and penalties.

Police say Maier began driving through E-ZPass only lanes in January 2005 to avoid paying trolls at the Interstate 95 toll plaza near the Maryland Delaware line.

I am confused, they take a picture of your license plate whenever you go through there if you don't pay, did this guy think he would actually get away with it?

You can drive through without paying the fee.. but you get a bill every month or so with the charge.

What I dislike is that often you have companies charging a toll even though the bridge has already paid itself off from previous tolls. I suppose you still need maintenance money, but doesn't that usually come from elsewhere? What's the point in tax if you're going to end up paying more anyway. Also, they could at least reduce the toll fee once the bridge has paid itself out, instead they usually increase it. Fucking profit monkeys

Its a unit you stick to your window, and it charges your credit card when you go through, and you don't have to stop (no rail or anything).

I've had an idea that I call the "Transporter" method. Fix your car whereby flipping a switch will lower another license plate in front of your normal one (or flip yours over to reveal another) and that's what gets the picture. Oh yeah!

That's one reason why most people dispise the thought of toll roads...because they are promised that the toll is to pay for the road, but the toll never goes away. So you're effectively getting taxed for the road, plus paying to use it...double-dipping by the govt.

I could've used that when I got my camera speed-gun speeding ticket this week...

I hate tolls with a passion.  If a state needs more money to maintain their roads and bridges etc, then they need to put that in their budget, not soak people for it otherwise.  Everytime I drive through Illinois and see that stupid sign "thank you for using the Illinois tollway" ... as if I have a choice.  And why are the roads still so crappy if we're paying so much toll money??!??!??!?

Not sure about the Bond movie, but it was in a Mythbusters episode! (they had another license plate on the back of their legal one and flipped it over)

Actually, the way EZ Pass works is you buy an account and get this little transmitter box. You still are supposed to slow down or wait for it to authenticate as you approach the booth. But the box just automatically debits your account and when it gets to a certain point, it recharges itself automatically from your credit card/debit acct.
