I'm thinking about getting an HD LCD TV.  I've read quite a lot of stuff on the net and there are a lot of different opinions.  I want to get one 32" or bigger.  My main problem is is 1080p worth it?  The main reason I would be buying one is so I can get a blu-ray player (PS3).  I don't have sky hd or wont be getting it in the near future.  What would you say is the best make?

Thanks for any input.

I could stretch to about £700 max.  Considering I would need to get a blu-ray player/PS3 too.

Sharp Aquos! I just was ordered a 32" 1080p Sharp Aquos LCD TV for my birthday. The reviews for it on Newegg were incredible.

With £700. I think you could get Samsung M87 or Sony V3000

M87
If you trust the Internet, this site is pretty cheap compared to other retailers

The V3000 has few extra features, such as 24p True Cinema. But, I think it will be over your budged.

Here is the V3000...I paid £900 for that in January...Gotta love technology prices.

1080p is the best picture right now , even 780p is better then 1080i

Ok, 1080p will probably be my choice.  Are there any smaller ones that anyone would recommend?  Just to try and save a bit of money.

well I suppose you could argue that progressive content looks better than interlaced, even if the resolution is lower

does it really?

i always heard that between progressive and interlaced, there is no real discernible difference

Are screens with a resolution of 1366x768 720p or 1080i?  I'm guessing the former.  Will 1366x768 be good enough?  i.e will I notice a difference on say a 37" or 40" screen?

Agreed ^.  Less you sit and studied the sutble differences between them to the extent u knew what to look for, knowone is going to be any the wiser.  Though, with that said, I tend to find watching things like sports looks better in 1080i, but 720p is easier on the eye since it is that progressive image, its not flashing at you back and forth.

720p means 1366x768, but you can still use 1080i(you chose that from the PS3 settings)...720p is max for most PS3 games, and that's what you should chose. When you watch movies, you can use the 1080i.

So if I'm getting this right 1366x768 incorporates both 720p and 1080i?  And it can be switched about whenever?  This is too complicated!

720p is the progressive scan.
1080i is the interlaced.

Here what those are:

Progressive or noninterlaced scanning is a method for displaying, storing or transmitting moving images in which all the lines of each frame are drawn in sequence. This is in contrast to the interlacing used in traditional television systems where only the odd lines, then the even lines of each frame (each image now called a field) are drawn alternatively.

As I said, If you play PS3 games, the game will detect the resolution automatically and set it to 720p. If you watch movies, the PS3 will chose 1080i.

720p = 1280 x 720 progressive / non-interlaced
1080i = 1920 x 1080 interlaced
1080p = 1920 x 1090 progressive / non-interlaced

generally 1080p > 1080i > 720p, although some people prefer 720p over 1080i, as 1080i can have some flicker and some very fast movement might look weird

Go with the new models of Sharp Aquos. They are reasonably priced. Samsung is just a trendy name... their tv's are good, but not great. Sony makes one of the best LCD HDTV's around, but you have to get into their high-end models to truly notice a difference... but when you get that high you'll be spending around $3,000 for a 40". The new Toshiba Regza series is also a very good tv. And yes, you need to go with 1080p or you're just wasting money.

Yeah, it's too bad 780p doesn't exist though.  Fortunately 720p does.

Realistically, 1080i provides higher image quality than 720p..
