Yeah, I don't really want to rely on a bell if a bear comes. I really would feel much safer with a gun or even large knife. I know to hang the food from a tree, I just want to know whether I can walk around with a shotgun strapped to my back/laying next to me whispering sweet nothings while I sleep.

get a really good pair of hiking boots and make sure to break them in before your camping trip

bring plenty of socks

get a gerber ... they are a must

bring a flashlight ... my votes are on a surefire {awsm lights}

use the right backpack, espically one that has a waist strap and cinch it up high .. so the weight sets more on your upper back and shoulders

I'm going to try and not repeat what others have posted

you're on govt. property and bringing loaded firearms are a no-no

but if they don't know you brought it on to govt. land and happened to use it while defending yourself against bears then everything is fine

suggest .454 revolver

you should be fine with a .45 against a bear. 15 9mms would probably do the trick too. get hollow points.

Time for an admission, i did try and go camping, but we forgot to look at the map whilst walking, and well, it ended up with us being rescued by mountain rescue in the pitch black and heavy fog, dogs were awesome though that found us, maybe next time i'll actually get to camp

-Place your sleeping place on a soft spot, be it a smooth rock, or grass. Rock preferably, as you won't find as many crawlers on them. Sand is good too, if it's available. Just make sure it isn't quick sand.

-Bring plenty of water bottles. If possible, haul a 2 gallon water bottle with ya. Soda will dry your mouth.

-Bring lights. Flashlights, or a torch, as the British say. Bring spare batteries too.

-Matches. Place a box of matches in a waterproof container. Plastic does a good job.

He's already been and come back. I don't think he needs anymore advice...
