This is really more about formal wear and dances, but I was too lazy to make a better title.

Would wearing a suit (not tuxedo) to a prom be considered under dressed? Obviously, the jacket and pants would be matching.

I didn't know I was going until after the time I could get one.

A nice tux can look pretty sharp. By nice, I mean stay away from the bowtie and cummerbund. Go with a regular tie and a vest.

@OP A suit is fine. The silk shirt someone mentioned sounds a little over the top, but it's high school, so it's probably alright. You can probably skip the tie too. If you have it, try a dark suit with a white/light-colored long-sleeve button up. Skip the tie and go for an old pair of chucks like someone else said. Don't shave either, and you might be able to pull off the rugged-semi-formal look.
