just got an email that's saying my tax returns were rejected...

why?

because my parents claimed me as a dependent.

I'm not a fucking dependent... I even called them to make sure they hadn't claimed me as a dependent.

so now that it's the 18th of april (3 days after the tax return deadline, for those of you who didn't know) I'm fucked.
I won't get a tax return unless I call and yell at the government.... and even then...

so what do I do? Guilt trip my parents into giving me the 600 dollars they owe me?

Or does anyone know if because I've already filed, I have an extension?

If your return was rejected, then you never filed and wouldn't have any need to, since you were claimed as a dependent.

Go strongarm the 600 bones from your parents.

I did file, and I do have a need to... not means no money... I can still be a dependent and get money, but because my parents told me incorrectly that I was not a dependent, the government saw the discrepancy and said my tax returns were invalid.

I THINK you get an extension for it.  If not, start preparing for the auditors.

But honestly, this is why I pay someone to do my taxes.  He's been doing them for my family since before I was born...same guy who does them for all of the Chicago Blackhawks...and he charges us next to nothing.  It is so incredibly worth it to not ever have to worry about my taxes.

Also, I'm editing the title of this thread.  As it is right now...it's kind of...excessive.

Make your parents pay. And then, make them buy you a car or something.

XD HAHAHA! fine with me.

So, I talked to my mom, and I learned that THEY PAY SOMEONE TO DO THEIR TAXES... so, those people claimed me as a dependent on my parents' behalf. They've already gotten their return back, so they can't refile... so it looks like I'll have to refile and settle for less money. My mom said "Don't even insinuate that we owe you anything..."
So... I'm not gonna argue with her. Whatever, she'll never take any responsibility for anything... but I don't care. I've let them know that I'm $866 dollars worth of Frustrated right now. We'll see how it works out.

How old are you?  That has a lot to do with whether or not you can even be claimed as a dependent.  The same thing happened to a friend of mine this year and me last year.  Luckily, I filed before my parents this year.  That really sucks though.

If they used your social security number in any way, you can't file taxes.

Really?  When I got claimed as a dependent, I filed taxes for three consecutive years.

That's not true. I earn a taxable income, and even if they claim me as a dependent (and use my SSN), can file a tax return, and get money back as well...
I just don't get nearly as much.
Nor do I get that stimulus package.

What I'm saying is that, according to the government, you never filed because your return was invalid.

As for the dependent thing, it's been a couple of decades, so please forgive the old-timer's mental cobwebs.

Forgiven.
And I see what you're saying now.

And to those of you saying "make your parents pay," I think I've decided that this is nobody's fault. Miscommunication. I will try and get my 300 dollars from their 1200 dollar Stimulus Package... but I'm not going to make them pay me the difference. They're my parents. They have supported me in many ways for many years and will continue to do so as long as I live.
