Should the world boycott the 2012 Olympics because of Britain's role in the ILLEGAL WAR and MILITARY OCCUPATION of Iraq and Afghanistan???

I know its in 4 years time but by the looks of it, it doesn't seem like we are pulling out of both countries any time soon.


The last time that the Olympics were boycotted it was because of Russia's "unlawful occupation" of Afghanistan.I really can't see much difference between the situation then and now.Maybe one of our honest politicians can explain.

Are you going to punish international athletes because of foul publicity as perceived by certain groups of people? Even if it is boycotted, what ultimate difference would it make?

On an unrelated note, I've been through a similar discussion on a messenger where the anti-war side started bringing out pictures of casualties. It was interesting to bring up an older log where the same person was criticizing pro-lifers for their 'tasteless gore-plastered pictures of dead babies.'

I never patronize Olympics anyway, so sure, what the hay...BOYCOTT 'EM!  And boycott whoever gets 2016 too!  And might as well throw in the winter olympics because seriously, is ice skating really an olympic sport?

Boycotting the Beijing Olympics makes the most sense, but even then, we'd still look like hypocrites because we trade so heavily with China.

I exercised my boycott badness last week by choosing an Emerson (made in TX) clock radio instead of the same priced chinese alternative which looked cooler (and would probably hold up better than some crap made by Bubba in TX.  But by golly, I'm proud to have done that.

Fuck the Olympics, it's going to do more harm to this city than any terrorist could wish for. We're going to put so much cash into building those stadiums (as if we didn't spend enough on Wembley) and no doubt it will end up costing 10X what it was thought to have cost (just like every other megaproject in this place) and like Athens and all the other places the venues will just be wasted after the Olympics and the whole thing will be a waste of money.

People give the Olympics way too much credit. The Football World Cup is a more spectacular, more entertaining, more appealing and even a more profitable event to host than the Olympics. Any day of the week. None of that bullshite politics either. And pretty much zero drug abuse.

BTW - The war in Afghanistan was legal and justified, the war in Iraq was the illegal and unjustified fucked up one. Don't bunch them togethor, realise that Afghanistan is a worthwhile mission.

Well they had the games in Germany during the rise of the Nazis, they had them in Russia despite what was going on in Afghanistan at the beginning of the 80's, they're having the current games in China despite allegations of serious human rights violations and arms deals with Sudan and they're having the 2012 games in Britain despite Britain playing a leading role in the possibly illegal invasion of Iraq...that's pretty much what I'm basing my opinions on.

No country is angelic when it comes to domestic and foreign policy but it's always a risky business allowing the International 'poster boys' of controversy to host these big events as it makes talk of boycotts more likely to arise. It's a very subjective issue too though...I can bet America would be screaming blue murder if Iran or Venezuela were given the games whereas other countries would have no problem with it.

I reckon rotate the games between Andorra and Liechtenstein on a continual basis!

I visited Greece about a year before the games and I thought there was no way in hell they were ever going to be ready for them with the amount of construction that still had to be done.

If you are going to use things like that to judge if a nation is "worthy," there would be no olympics.  And who would the judges be?  Where would they be from that gives them the moral authority to judge entire nations of who is morally clean enough to host the Olympics?

Not Japan.  Genocide of at least hundreds of thousands of Chinese.
Not Australia, for the reason listed above.
Not China, for Tibet and general human rights violations.
Not the UK, because they forcefully anexed a sizable chunk of the world at one point.
Not Spain, because they ended up depopulating most of South America in their quest for gold.
Not the Dutch, for their actions in the slave trade.
Not South Africa, since they had Apartheid.
Not Isreal, for obvious reasons.
Not Germany; they killed millions.
Not Russia, also for killing millions.

I tell you what.  Just bounce the Olympics between Canada and Guam; I think that would about do it.

The Olympics are supposed to be a way to bring nations together in the guise of friendly competitve spirit.  Nowadays, it is just a political tool to try to show off to everyone else.  And boycotting is nothing but a political tool as well.

I can understand (not agree with, but certainly understand) that mentality WRT Iraq. But Afghanistan? Really? Then you'd have to say the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France, and many many other countries could never host the Olympics because they participated in OEF.

I've never seen a decent argument against taking action in Afghanistan...care to forward one?

Alot of people like to bunch Afghanistan and Iraq together. I'm completely for Afghanistan, but completely against Iraq. Fuck, if we didn't head off to Iraq and instead focused entirely on Afghanistan, the Taliban would be in a much worse position than now and Iran wouldn't be so much of an enemy and a "problem"
