Ok this is specifically for Australian defence force... i have medical tests and that sort of thing coming up (im planning on going to ADFA) and i was wondering... when i was young i suffered from asthma, i dont get it anymore... but if i was asked a direct question like "Have you ever suffered from asthma" and i said "Yes, only as a child" do you think they would reject me straight away?

im going for pilot in RAAF so its very competitive... but im wondering if i shouldnt disclose the fact that i used to suffer from it...

help would be appreciated.. (this is spefically ADF but people from other countries militaries etc feel free to give your opinion)

Well my moto is "Don't carry the baggage."  Meaning tell everything because it could come back to haunt you.  I wanted to join the US Army and told them I had seen a Psychiatrist for depression a while back w/ medication.  Then they rejected me because of bad feet.  -_-

Edit:  I was told I could come back if I had my feet fixed.  But, I had them fixed but still debating whether or not to finish the job.

I'll just say this.  When I went for my medical testing they told me if you had any form of asthma you are automatically disqualified.  They told me it was very important to tell because of how hard they push you.  Maybe you should got a local military office and get someone to do some PT with you.  Push as hard as they can to see if your asthma comes back.

It shouldn't get your failied, considering ou don't have it anymore.... So just tell them everything. Hell, can't you be prosecuted if you lie on the forms and it ends up stopping you from doing your job down the track? (I think the forms would be legal documents. I can't remember from my application).

Now as far as straight out failing goes, being red-green colorblind takes the cake. This is how my debrief with the recruiter went:

"You excelled in the aptitude tests and I want to highly recommend you for the next stage... but you are RG colour blind. Sorry, but you can't be an Airfield Engineer (first choice), or pretty much anything at ADFA except Admino or Logo."

Best of luck!

Pre-entry medical examination
During the selection process your medical fitness will be assessed and you will be required to meet Australian Defence Force medical standards before an offer of appointment or enlistment will be made. The Australian Defence Force uses the National Health and Medical Research Council endorsed Body Mass Index (BMI) approach to determine an acceptable weight for height range for the population.

Any offer is subject to you maintaining your medical fitness and passing a final medical examination on the day you are appointed or enlisted.
I think they might have relaxed the rules on athsma a bit as they are crying out for recruits. I think you should be honest with them. As is mentioned above , the only stipulation they have on their website is BMI, athsma isnt mentioned. Although they might bring this up later.
All the best with it mate.

From what I can remember, it was a computer based test. There were some simple algebra questions (like REALLY simple), umm... some association things kinda like "this is to that, as this is to _______", etc. It was kinda like a general IQ test, with some psych stuff thrown into it as well.

In the US Army (IDK if it spans across the whole military), a diagnosis of asthma before you were 13 is fine if you pass some tests. A diagnosis of asthma after 13 is an automatic disqualification for service.

You should never lie, i don't know anything about the Australian rules, or any rules for that matter, but anyway, if they find out they may kick you out?
