How do I set up a Network Printer?

I got a laser printer from my dad's office, with no manuals or CDs.

It's a Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4 plus, and it's connected to my router. I can ping it from my machine, but I can't add it as a printer in the Printers and faxes window.

I also can't find any installation CDs on HP's website.

I think you go Control Panel > Printer > Set up Wirless Printer etc.

You can usually download the drivers (no cd needed).

Now to add the printer, Open the add printer wizard.

Choose LOCAL (NOT network, even though you might think that) but uncheck he automatic detection option.
Then instead of standard port choose: create a new port
choose TCP/IP port.
add the ip adress and a name for the port.

That should do it I think. Think you have to reassure which driver to use then etc etc, pretty self-explanatory.

Is it possible to share the printer I have connected to a PC that is connected to the router with the rest of the network?

The printer doesn't have an ethernet port.

You can get a network print server for usb printers. I was thinking about doing that for my wireless network and usb printer. All you would have to do then is assign a ip address on your wireless router and you would have a network printer.

I think it is, my mums PC has a printer connected to it with a parallel cable, which I can print to with my machine or my laptop. (as long as her PC is switched on.)

You have to share it on the network.

Maybe I'm not understanding something, but have you right-clicked the printer and chosen Share?

On the other computers you set up a new printer, but this time you DO use Network Printer. No drivers necessary, it pulls them across (after warning you its a virus omgs).

Yeah I found it a little odd too, especially since you want it to be a network printer, but now you know and you can help others too

Jens, yeah just rightclick and select share printer.
Everyone who wants to print has to be in the same home-network though (so network of each computer has to be the same name).
Only problem is that your mum's computer has to be on for you to print.
