Plasma - darker blacks, good for movies, cheaper for large sizes (>42 or so), needs lower ambient light most of the time
LCD - brighter, usually moar vivid, can be in bright rooms

there's moar but i can't really remember.

LCD has a longer life span generally, and If you have the money its the better buy.

Go LCD. Longevity is greater, and apparentely it's got a better picture quality. It's why I went LCD over Plasma.

Edit:

Here's a good article:

Also; Plasma screens are fucktons expensive. You can get a good 1080p 40" LCD TV for like $1400.

As always, don't buy by brand or whether it's LCD or Plasma. Buy what is best for you and research the individual product you are going to buy properly first.

Plasma for movies
LCD for everything else.

Note, that the gain of a plasma for movies is hardly something to write home about, with that said I would go LCD.

The greater life span of LCD isnt really so much of an argument, plasma would last over eleven years if ran for 24 hours a day (so its a pointless argument).

Plasma's can also suffer from image burn (literally, an image burned into the screen, kinda embarasing if you are into porn, try explaning that to your mum ).

You cant go wrong really with any brand, but, it tends to be sony and samsung people go with, samsung gets my pick.  They have a new one out with a 50,000:1 contrast ratio, its great.

LCD. If you want something like plasma, you're better off considering 3-chip DLP or LCoS.

I've always been a huge fan of Plasma's tbh.

The new Pioneer Kuro's are fucking awesome.

I personaly prefer the image of the Plasmas, while others prefer LCDs. I suggest you go to a TV store (not a normal electronic store, a HiFi/TV store) and find out what you like best.

Arguably the best TV available is a plasma (Pioneer Kuro).

Each have their own advantages and disadvanatages, but I'd seriously look at both, don't just rule one out before you've seen their picture quality.

Go to Best Buy (or wherever you Americans can see them running) have a look, do some research online with different reviews of the ones you like and can afford, then get it as cheap as possible.

DLP offers the best HD picture there is. Their contrast ratio and clarity cannot be matched. However they have one huge drawback... their size, which turns off a lot of people from buying them. Fortunately they're making DLP's smaller and smaller. You'll see flat, wall-hanging DLP's in the near future, and when that happens LCD and Plasma won't even be a question of preference.

Pioneer Kuro is indeed the shit.
Expensive but you get what you pay for.
