WTF!! can't page back?

What's the deal with these website's that you can't go page back?
I have to close the whole page and start my search all over again every-time this happens...
I was looking at wasp, 5 pages in I see a cool picture and click on it, then I try to go back to continue my search and it will not page back...
It only does a quick refresh flash and that's it, no matter how fast I click the back button..

What causes this?

it's a code in the site that makes it. or something along those lines.
Just quick double click on the back button to got back. Works most of the time.

What's the purpose of this?
I was at some small site that had a picture of a wasp and a little description.
Why would a page like that have a redirect?

just right click on the back button and choose a page far enough back

(I have to use the drop down arrow, no option for right click)
