Maxtor?

Yuck.

I had 2 Maxtors and guess what-they are both dead.

Guess I'm lucky, both of my Maxtors are working in tiptop shape, 1 IDE, 1 SATA.

Good for you though 1 of my Maxtors died 2 weeks ago.

I have 4 Maxtor drives (through no fault of my own). 2 are dead. One is highly unreliable. The final one works, but data on it frequently becomes corrupted and the drive is horrifically noisy.

We all know a Maxtor drive wouldn't last 5 years.

Raptors are a waste of money, unbearably loud, and provide an increase in performance that can only be seen through benchies. That said, you should all go on Ebay tomorrow(around 5:00pm pacific) and purchase the one with a "buy it now" for $80.

I can highly, highly attest that to be false. Compared to my old computer booting up on a 250gb Caviar in about a minute, I boot up in a good 15-20 seconds.

Well either:

A.) Your Caviar was a piece of garbage

B.) My raptor is faulty

C.) My year-old 300gb Seagate came with built-in hax

?

I noticed no significant gain, and now with hindsight being 20/20, I would have spent that $250 on something else.

A) My caviar was pretty much brand new, AND booting with XP. My Raptor boots with VISTA and is like 3x faster.

B) Could be...but I doubt it

Does a FAST HDD really make things noticeable as far as performance?

Ive never done the Raptors, always been a generic WD man myself..

I have a single 74GB raptor, and I've put BF2 on it. The load times are faster (compared to my old 160GB), so I'm usually one of the first to spawn when a server changes maps. Very handy for when I was trying to make general, and needed to jet hours.
That said, I got my raptor second hand for $70AU (if I remeber correctly) compared to $200AU for a brand new one. You should only really get a raptor if you've already got a killer system and are looking to make it that bit faster. Otherwise, you're better off spending the money on a better CPU/more RAM/a good GPU as the overall performance increase will be more noticable.

This drive seems to be very good if you're a real enthusiast with lots of money. I'll probably look at one once the price drops and I've upgraded just about everything in my current system.

I also get on the server first. I have a 150 Raptor, friend has a 75 Raptor and we are both first on the server though i often am in before him and he has QX9660 and DDR3. 150 Raptor is just a bit faster than 75 Raptor. I always get the chopper.
