It has more to do with the huge rise in consumption by emerging industrialized countries like China and India.
It also has a bit to do with the US having used up a lot of it already.

There are only 2 factors... supply and demand. So Bush and Sub Prime Borrowers/lenders don't count.

Oil production (Supply):
Has risen almost consistently for 2 decades. So the War in the ME and OPEC have not reduced supply.

Here's a better graph to show the 'effects' of the war (or OPEC) on oil supply in the past decade.

There are NONE.

Oil use (Demand):

So there is one and only one conclusion. It is AMERICAS fault. They have over consumed and pushed the price up. China and India increase in oil demand also does not even match Americas increase in demand over the same period, so no 'blame' can be directed towards them, especially considering they use a fraction of the US and even less in per capita terms.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
And then you have the audacity to bitch and moan about petrol prices that are anything up to 50% of what the rest of the world has to pay

I'm talking about current conditions and yes, America has used more than its share. I also said "more" to do with the rise of consumption in emerging industrialized countries. I don't see how past consumption by the US has anything to do with what is going on now??? Take a look at this.

They are entering a phase America is leaving behind...

Again, the consumption is rising, speculators are still going nuts and there will be a correction soon enough.
