I just noticed that the 80GB PS3 model has virtually disappeared.  Newegg and TigerDirect no longer carry it and buy.com is selling it for $750.  A google search tells me that Best Buy has also officially stopped selling it.  This leaves only the 40GB model.  WTF?  Does anyone have any info on this, like if Sony has discontinued production or if there will be any bigger models in the future (120GB maybe)?

I've read you can replace the ps3's hdd with any 2.5" SATA drive, and that it shows you in the manual.
I've never done this, nor do I even have a ps3, so I don't know if this is a fact.

It's incredibly easy. I'm going to be replacing my 20 gb hdd with a 120 or 160 gb notebook hard drive eventually. It is in the manual.

Standards ftw.

Really?  Are you really saving money though, because you still have to buy the notebook hard drive...

Also, I bet opening the PS3 and tinkering around like that voids the warranty.

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure it's worth it.  Let's say a 100GB notebook HDD is $80.  The only PS3 model available is the 40GB, which is $400.  If you bought the notebook drive + the 40GB PS3, you would be saving $20 from the 80GB PS3 price and get 20GB more storage, but you would also be voiding the warranty.  I think I'd like to keep my warranty just in case.  I guess it's worth it for anyone with a 20GB model though.

Actually, this will NOT void your warranty, so kudos to Sony.

The PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system hard disk drive (HDD) is removable and upgradeable. An upgrade can be performed by removing the hard drive and replacing it with a larger capacity drive. Please refer to the PLAYSTATION 3 system owner's manual on how to properly upgrade the hard disk drive. The HDD must be a 2.5” SATA HDD.

Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. (SCEA) does not have any information regarding specific compatibility or recommendations for hard disk drives for the PLAYSTATION 3 system. Upgrading the HDD will not void the warranty, however, the consumer takes full responsibility when upgrading the HDD. If you wish to back up your data, you may use the back up utility on the PLAYSTATION 3."

The added cost for installing your own hdd may be worth it if for some people. Personally 40GB would be more than enough for me (I think?)
Plus, you can still use the hdd from the ps3 in your pc, laptop or whatever.

Get a lower-capacity PS3 and replace its HDD when 2.5 prices go down. *shrug*

The 40 GB PS3 is not backwards compatible so that would mean you would have to keep the ps2 around when you want to play the older games from that system.  I would much rather have the PS3 80GB combo that comes with MGS4 and a dualshock 3 controller for 499.
