Most of the shootings in the article took place at night, one was someone shooting at a passing car, one was shot from a passing car.
I'm not sure how carrying a gun would have helped much if you can't see your attacker and they've already opened fire.

The gun controll debate can not be debated between Americans and EUs because as far as guns are concerned its a whole different world.

Main argument that Americans make is that criminals will always have as much guns as they want, so gun control only takes guns away from law abiding citizens. Thats kind of true for AMERICA because the country is saturated with illegal firearms and thats something that many EUs dont aknowledge. Irony is that, according to stuf I read (Im no expert), mayority of illegal firearms in USA were once legaly bought but were stolen or resold. They are not illegaly smuggled in to USA. Correct me if Im wrong please.
What many Americans fail to understand is that thats not the case in most of Europe. In Vienna you cant just go in to a bad neighborhood and buy bunch of guns. Thats why we have BANK robberies where criminals only have steel pipes, rocks, kitchen knives or just shout really loud. Why? Because they just couldnt get their hands on a firearm. Robberies do happen, but in most cases there are no injuries at all. People relly on police to catch and punish the criminals and thats it.
Many Americans dont understand that mentality just as many Europeans dont understand the situation in America.

Chicago has been F'ed up for a LONG time...and the politicians never quite figure out how to solve the problem.

I blame the Chicago Public School system for a lot of it.  That system has been utterly failing the majority of its students for decades.  Poverty and poor education are strongly correlated with crime, in large cities.

Maybe in Germany.  Gun control laws here, mostly regarding assault weapon bans, carry bans, and purchase restrictions(all of which already exist to varying degrees), only affect law abiding citizens.  If a banger wants a gun he doesn't go to a gun store, because he's usually poor and has a felony record.  He goes behind a liquor store and buys from Paco who gets his merchandise by performing armed robberies.

But, to be honest, most Americans, including myself, don't really give a shit about murder rates, especially urban murder rates.  As long as these animals are killing each other, we don't have to pay for their cushy incarceration, and they do a pretty good job of self regulating their population.  The only time we get pissed is is when they leave the zoo and misbehave, killing kids and middle-class/upstanding/non-minority people.

There could have been someone with a gun who could have supressed the gangsters back but they didnt.

I've held this position for some time now: gun control is more based on culture than anything else. A society which wants gun control will have gun control, and it will work well. On the other hand, if society doesn't want gun control, then gun control simply will not work.

Great Idea.  Blame the schools.  In fact, let's just blame the government.  No, let's blame rich people.  It has absolutely nothing to do with our criminalistic, gang culture.  It's all their fault.

Chicago's a mess

Incompetent teachers, pathetic parents, corrupt politicians, lame kids, and toxic air.

throw in firearms, drugs, and illegal immigrants, and you have a crime rate that would make New York jealous.

while I would agree to that to some extent ( society will pass those laws which it considers necessary ), I am somewhat troubled by the implications.
Because what that really means is that in those societies, people are willing to live with the fact that so many of their fellow citizens die as a result of the huge number of firearms in circulation.

I'm not even sure I buy that argument, the best defence against someone with a gun is a bullet-proof vest and a set of running shoes.
In the average civilian encounter just how useful is a gun?
If the other guy is already pointing a loaded gun at you just what are you going to do?
That gun in your pocket is not much use, unless you can draw, aim and fire before he can move his finger 1mm.
a valid point, but that is what experience in drawing and handling a gun from a holster is about, your avg thug doesnt know shit about guns.
well, you "average" thug doesn't really need to have that much experience, does he ?
When he has the gun pointed at your head already, you really think anyone with a sane mind would try to make a move at drawing his own gun, much less lock&load, release the safety and aim ?

I can understand why someone would want to have a gun at home, to protect his family, but who in his right mind would want to risk his life for a fucking wallet and a mobile phone ? I mean, seriously, we are talking about life or death decisions here, for a wallet ?
I wont allow myself in that type of postion, the gun will be at his head.

who are you, Steven Seagal ?

In spite of what Hollywood would tell you, the average chances of disarming someone who has a gun pointed are your head are slim.
And again, why would you want to risk your life in such a scenario ?

IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH CRIMINAL AND GANG CULTURE!  Why do you think so many young people turn to gangs?  It is because the gang is "accepting" and offers a future they could otherwise not achieve.  Those are the primary motivations.

IF you give someone the opportunity to be financially and socially successful, the attractiveness of gangs and crime significantly decreases.  When students are never taught effectively, the system limits the opportunities available.  What kind of job/future do most people who are illiterate have available to them?

WOW

beerface, im sorry but you have some VERY wrong ideas about firearms.
first, do have a CCW license? i fucking hope not, cause you are making those of us that do, look really fucking bad.

drawing your gun should be the LAST thing you think about. as a CCW license holder, it is MY RESPONSIBILITY TO AVOID SITUATIONS THAT MIGHT NECESSITATE THE USE OF MY FIREARM. that means, that if i see someone that i THINK, MIGHT have the intent to come at me, i get THE FUCK OUT OF THERE. why? because carrying a firearms legally DOES NOT MAKE YOU AN EXTENSION OF THE LAW.

IT IS FOR PERSONAL PROTECTION.

how fast you draw your gun from your holster wont mean shit when three or four of them get you from behind, and shoot you with your own gun.....just cause you have a false sense of safety.

the way you talk about all of this tells me you have little experience regarding concealed carry, and it troubles me that someone like you would attempt to obtain a CCW license.

sorry for all the caps, but jesus fucking christ this is ignorant.
