I'm trying to decided between new CPU and motherboard or a new monitor.

CPU and Motherboard

or

Monitor

My current monitor is a 17" CRT running @ 1280x1024.  My computer specs are in my sig.

Thanks for any advice.

Well your current 3dmark score is 10k, that's enough to play every game maxed out except crysis. I'd say go for an new monitor.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Your CPU do need changing. I mean, if you get a better monitor, you will probably be stuck at low settings, considering the CPU is still a limiting factor.

A higher resolution hardly puts any more load on the CPU, just the graphics card. On my lappy, for example, the CPU is bottlenecking my Radeon 9200 (Pentium Ms are NO-NO for gaming, somehow), and I don't loose any FPS going from 640x400 to 1280x800 in BF2.

I think I might actually go for the PC parts because I could always sell my CPU/Motherboard and make make close to enough to buy a cheap LCD.

A cheap LCD will not make any improvements over your CRT. In fact, it will be a lot worse. Go for the screen, or save up for a decent LCD.

lol. I think he means that your CPU is kick arse. compared to mine anyway.

Buy a nice LCD monitor. LCD is way better on the eyes. I have a HP w2207 and I bought it at an expensive place, but I'm glad I bought it. I mean what's the point of having nice specs if you don't like to look at it.

The CPU isn't bad. An X2 AM2 @ 2.8GHz is pretty decent. An overclocked q9400 may be faster but won't give you that much better results in games. Get a new monitor. I'd hate to have to use a small CRT

Bah, I don't know what to do.  I only have something like $475 to spend.  I want to get a second HDD and a new router for sure.  Its the rest I can't decide on!

Get a new monitor. 1680x1050 is a perfect resolution for your 8800GT. Right now, its being limited at 1280x1024. Only game that might be different is Crysis, but does it really matter? Just a "Benchmark" now.

My 8800GTS handles everything (Except Crysis) on high at 1680x1050

Well I hope so cause that monitor is going to serve a dual purpose.  For my PC and 360.
