OK so with all this talk I'm trying to get things set up too.

The fact that the desktop with attached printer is an XP sp2 machine and the lap top trying to see the shared printer is Vista home 32 bit sp0

I went to printers and faxes, right clicked and chose "share" and enabled sharing of the printer.
The first of these threads made it sound as if that was it...but the lap top find no networked printers.

I have all firewalls turned off at this point, The desktop connected to the router by a cable, the laptop connected via wireless.
I thought my router may be blocking things, but I can run a local BF2 game between the two machines...and if EA can do it anyone can.

I tried the "additional drivers" button, but XP doesn't know about vista so its not listed as an option.

The printer has been used from each computer while being directly connected, and they both have the drivers for it still loaded.

Windows just can't find the networked printer.

First up, I've not used Vista yet, so I can only guess here, but...

Make sure both PC's have the same workgroup name (right click My Computer, select Properties, select Computer Name, click Change, in XP)...

Hmmm well they were not set the same...but now they are.

Still not seeing anything about a printer from the laptop...

hmm... unfortunately further help is going to require more knowledge of Vista than I have...

I can tell you basically what you need to check, I just don't know how to do it in Vista.

1. Make sure File and Printer sharing is enabled on both machines.
2. Check whether you can see shared folders on the desktop PC from the laptop (it should show up, even if no actual folders are shared).
3. Make sure your windows firewall settings are correct.

TBH I don't know...I know what it means to ping...and I think you can from dos prompt or from the "run" box... but I don't really now how...

I did however run a local game of BF2, with desktop hosting and laptop connecting to it. That works fine....I guess that counts as pinging?

I only enabled sharing via printer menu, I do remember there were some other "file and print sharing" options elsewhere that I don't have turned on. The other stuff I read made it sound like all you had to do was select "share this printer"

I'll play with file and print sharing after class.

Do this to ping your laptop or PC.  Lets ping the PC.  On your PC, go to start>run>type cmd.  Command prompt will come up.  Then type ipconfig /all.  Note the IP address for your PC.  Now, on your laptop, go to start>run>type cmd to once again bring up ur command prompt on your laptop.  This time, however, type in this line:  ping (whatever the ip address is for your PC) then hit enter....if you see something like bytes sent bytes receive, you can ping your PC from your laptop or vice versa.  If you see something like The request has timed out, then you can't.  Hope that helps ya.  Anyway questions?  Feel free to PM me.

Here's what I usually have to do:

- turn on printer sharing on home computer with attached printer
- Find the lan ip of the home computer:   [ start > run > cmd > ipconfig ].
- that should give you a number like  192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x - write that number down.
- on laptop (connected to your lan via wireless):  click on 'my computer'
- enter the home computers lan ip in the address bar preceded by 2 double backslashes:

- hit enter and the laptop *should* connect to the home computer.
- It should show the printers folder, click on that
- you should now see any available printers. right click on the one you want and 'connect', or just double click on it.
- It might ask if you want to install that network printer on your laptop > yes.

I actually did that exact thing a few months ago, signa and kept getting an error.  I tried again and it worked.  The difference?  I turned off my firewall for my pc and it worked.  I guess I forgot to do so when I was trying to do it way back when...The signa post is a way to network your printer if your printer does not have a ethernet connection.
